When I check windows update it shows update available for intel wireless card and graphics card, but sony vaio update site doesn't show any update. Previously on my desktop I had updated software for nvidia card and it messed up the resolution and other settings, then I read somewhere that its better to update from manufacturer's site instead of micorsoft. My question is: should I update it from Microsoft before installing vista SP1?

Well you can get the latest driver for your wireless card on Intel's website.
Also, check out www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum for the latest video card driver.
Never download any third-party software through Windows Update. You're just be asking for trouble. -
I too have always updated my VGN-FS from the Mfg'ers site instead of waiting on Sony - Intel in particular. Never had a problem.

You won't get any trouble installing updates offered by WU. -
You are asking for trouble when updating drivers via MS WU. Two or three times I've let my PC install them...and each time I had to use system restore (or reinstall) as those drivers did not install correctly and prevented my system from booting up.

I had problems with the Intel LAN drivers on WU. They made my CPUs pegs out (100%) and never let up. As soon as I went back to the Sony supplied drivers, it behaved again.
YMMV -
Use the AR6 graphics Driver.zip file on
ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com/PUB/VAIO/ORIGINAL/
It is compatible with most Nvidia video chips used in Sony notebooks. Check the inf to see if yours is in there.
