OK SONY people of the world, can you help a brother out?
I got home from work and start my Z and AVG updates like normal with a restart, this is where things go down hill...
No matter what I do the computer won't start, no Safe Mode, no "Strartup Repair", "System Restore", "Windows Memory Diagnostic". Only thing I can do is recover my files through the "Sony File Recovery" (or something like that) and Command Prompt works.
When I try the three different ways to boot into safe mode the Z will freeze when loading AVG drivers.
Normally I would just remove the hard drive and use a USB adapter to access it though another computer and delete the unwanted files, in this case I don't have an adapter to read the SSD.
Anyone know the command prompt to remove AVG Free? I can't find it though the WWW.

Well, seems more people will be sleepless, I just read on a dutch news site it is a widespread problem (again!) with AVG, so probably a quick google on 'AVG update windows boot problem' will give you a fix...
-
Thanks for the feed back StefanHamminga (^_^).
I did not have time to really research it for too long since I got off work at 8pm and had to be back in 7hrs. When I get home I have some ideas on how to fix it.
I will keep people posted. Maybe it will help someone (^_~). -
Why not try booting a USB or Cd with Linux on it, and delete the offending files that way?
I have had it do this on a few computers over the years. As time has gone on I have had more and more problems with AVG, it's just become too bloated I think. I'm slowly switching my customers over to Avast, it's just easier to deal with. -
AVG is aware of the problem and you can find their solutions on their forums:

Achusaysblessyou eecs geek ftw :D
You can try Microsoft Security Essentials after you fix your Z
. And as frightening as it sounds to use another piece of MS software, they did good with MSE
(and hopefully being from MS itself, you don't have to worry about updates killing Windows)

OK SONY people of the world, I'm back and badder than ever (^_^)!
So I got home and tried the link ddtz posted (I love you!)
Followed the instructions to the T but it would not work (>_<)!!
So I tried some other "fixes" I found on the world wide web, did NOT work!
Every fix I tried said "Use Windows Repair after applying the fix, blah, blah, blah". I was going to call it a night for round 2 tomorrow but decided to just start Win normally... IT WORKED!! ??
Oh well, things run fine now.
Thanks for all the input!

@ Bezerkeley fan,
I'll give AVG another chance since it's been over seven yrs use with no problems till now, but will keep MS in mind.
@ leslieann,
Yeah, I remember when AVG was so light, hardly using our resources. If it ever gets like Norton though... -
It's pretty close to Norton at this point, especially the suite they offer. Even the free version is a 140meg download for the 32bit. 140megs! Clamwin is 35 and Avast is 52. Even Norton 2009 is 35! It already surpassed Norton.
I was slowly weening customers off AVG, but this latest round is the final nail in the coffin. It's become a target like Norton for writers, it's big and buggy. Time to switch.
I get it that people want everything in one package, but no one package does everything that well, at least that I have found. When I personally need a tutorial on how to configure the firewall to allow something as simple as printer sharing, you failed. When you rob me of 10% of my resources, you failed.
You also may want to see this if you use Norton or AVG:

Hey, bugaroonie!
You need to get Ultimate Boot CD. You can boot into Parted Magic (linux) with it and get access to your drives. You can make it a bootable CD/DVD or make it bootable from a USB drive. Super handy in cases like yours.
I used AVG for a while after you told me about it. Then I was given an old lappy with avast on it. I switched to AVG and everything slowed down. Been using Avast on my F11, but just switched to MSE to see what it's like.

Seems to be helping for a lot of people. -
@ leslieann,
You are right. Over the yrs AVG has been something I once suggested to all my friends but these last 3yrs I don't feel good about it. I'm looking into other options. What do you suggest?
@ Siris Le Osiris,
Is there a free version of Nod32?
@ anseio,
The link ddtz provided had a boot image for optical drive and USB that does the same thing, it was one of the methods I used last night to get the Z up and running again.
One of the things that AVG has incorporated in the last few yrs a "Link Scanner" (or something like that) that will slow your machine down big time while browsing, I disable that. Overall AVG has gotten heavy and resource hoggin', I've have been lookin' into that Microsoft Security Essentials Achusaysblessyou suggested, it seems to have great reviews. I'm just worried that MSE will disable some of my MS programs, you know what I mean (you've seen what I do with my comp ;-).
How you like the MSE so far?
Hope you had fun skating! I was stuffing my face with sushi so wouldn't have been able to join you if I wanted.
@ Nautis,
That was the 1st thing I tried last night. -
avira free or panda cloud?
i am using symantec but it is not free version -
MSE it is.
I'm from country where AVG, NOD32 and Avast are being developed and I wouldn't recommend any of them. AVG and Avast are complete trash for me...as it was AV which was automatically installed on most of computers at schools and government offices in my country...and I spent many months trying to clean up mess they did there...
NOD32 is fine...always competing with Kaspersky...I always preferred Kaspersky though.
But nowadays MSE it is. Such nice light program being always in the top position in tests along with NOD32 and Kaspersky...and it is free. -
MSE is EXTREMELY light (can't emphasise that enough).
I was one of the few beta users and it did have bugs where while scanning larger archives, the RAM usage would go to about 90% including paging files.
It still happens (till about 60% usage) if you have 3GB or less RAM but nothing dangerous like the older days. But it is rather stable and you can do other things while scanning unlike AVG which will demand EVERYTHING from the hardware.
But apart from that, MSE covers the essentials, has the fewest false positives, and is most of the time darn quiet in the background unless a new version has been discovered (when it simply changes the logo colour over from green to orange).
I too once upon a time supported AVG. Until with AVG7.5 (if memory serves correct) they started bundling those Linkscanner toolbars into the installation, the day AVG started bloating. -
Skating was fun, but the ice was awful and the blades were all dull. I was slipping all over the place, and even fell once. My poor knee. I think I need to buy a pair of my own, just to be safe.
The wait for skates was long, so we got invited to wait instead at Din Tai Fung. I wanted to go soooooooooooooooooooo badly. I'm dying to try that place out. My friends weren't able to go though. Pooh! -
I ditched the AVG for MSE and am liking it so far.
~6,232 Kilobytes of memory being used in idle.
~6,668 K used during full scan. (After 40min of scanning)
~CPU load jumped from 1% to 20-30% in full scan.
~No noticeable decrease in performance while in full scan.
~Takes up 17.3 MB on my SSD.
Sayonara AVG!
Since the Z never gets bogged down (unless encoding 1080p vids) I wonder how it will do on an old machine?
Now let me visit all the dangerous web sites. If I don't post anything in the next few days send a search party out.
@ anseio,
My Chinese co-workers say that is a good place to chow down. -
MSE sounds good, but sorry, I just can't place ALL my trust in Microsoft. 5 years ago, MS had the worst security reputation in the industry. You wouldn't dare trust them with your anti-virus.
More than that
What is the most common OS? Windows
What is the most common firewall? Microsoft
What is the most common antivirus programs? Norton, AVG, Mcafee, MSE
If you are a virus writer, what do you aim for? THOSE.
If you bypass those, you capture probably 70% or more of PC's. If you change just one of those items, you reduce your chance of being hit with something by a large amount. -
actually if you still have this issue , the easiest way is to do a coule resarts until you are prompted for the windows recovery option. than go to the advanced options select a earlier restore point.
uninstall avg than reinstall avg than you can do a complete uninstall and than install avast -
Avast! is the best free anti-virus out there.
Updated AVG Free and Z will not start (>_<)!
