    Hi all,
Im new to sony, so i'm trying to figure out the main differences between the confusing aray of series :)

I like the design of the SZ the best, but the SR seems superior in terms of performance (the Radeon 3470 graphics compared to Nividia 8400M)

Can we expect an update to the SZ series with better graphic cards, or is it "replaced" by the SR?

    thanks for the help

i hate to say it.. i beleive its getting replaced.

and yep.. i bought an SZ just because of that.

i just loved the design and look of the SZ soooo much even though its stuck with an nvidia, SO i had to nab a SZ just incase they designed to scrap it for good (which i think is whats happening)

IMO i don't like how those new keyboards looking. but the SZ keyboard just looks so innovating... i was hoping they were going to keep this keyboard design forever.

The Vaio Z series is the replacement for the Vaio SZ series.

Thanks for the answers. Especially i also like that the SZ doesnt have this round cyllinder shaped thing under the screen. Its a much simpler and cleaner design, with no chrome cheap looking bling bling parts like the Z series.

Can anyone confirm that it is going?

The only ones who can really confirm it are Sony.
Oddly enough it still sells at max. price in Germany, but its gone in the UK.
So although its dying a slow death, it seems to be definitely going.
    Sadly :(

    I got mine though ;)

And I texpect it to last the next years and be a faithfull laptop :)

If you want the SZ, get it. However, one caveat, there is the NVidia issue, so if you want it for the NVidia card, you will have to go with the Z. Although no SZs have failed, there is no guarantee that the NVidia might not fail, if you will only use it occasionally your OK with it. Most people actually use the Chipset most of the time.

On a side-note: where can i find some real pictures of the SR series (in black)? It doesn't look to bad either. It definitely beats the lenovo t400.

i never use the x3100 on it to be honest.. i only put it on there a few times just to install the drivers for it wheni do want to switch over to it when classes start again. (Aug 20th for me)

But yeah.. i had this thing for over a month now and i been playing relentlessly on the Source engine and it has yet to fail.. plus you your still under warrenty with sony for atleast a year.. or you could just get the extended warrenty for wherever you purchased it at.

i knew for sure if i didn't get the SZ now i would regret it later..... this keyboard is just outstanding. i hope your decision is with the SZ.. it truely is a nice laptop.

I must admit the overall design of the SZ is more business looking than the Z. As others have said, the black SZ looks like a Stealth Fighter. Granted, the new screen on the Z looks killer, but for the extra $600 the Z costs over the SZ, I could get a nice 24" Monitor plus docking station.

Truly.. the SZ looks and specs are truly a killer.. and I bet Sony will realize and maybe not discontinue this.. the power, portability, reliability everything bundled together the notebook provides is incredible.. Unless the Z proves something, SZ will have to be back in some form or other. .

You cannot deny it Sony have done very well with the specs on the Z. I do think though that the SR model doesn't really offer anything really over the high end SZ other than the choice of a more powerful graphics card but then you lose out on the hybrid graphics as well.

The SZ is more comfortable to use than the SR and Z and i like the keyboard better as well. I used to think that more business users preferred standard keyboards but i don't know if that is true anymore.
The keyboard on the Lenovo models is partly what makes the Thinkpad notebooks so popular among business users.
I think that Sony should have worked on improving the SZ keyboard like work on making it a little less noisy and that.

I have said this before that i have only used the nvidia card once. I am not a power user. Some buyers (not usually those that post on computer forums) are not obsessed with specs and they will still go with the SZ based on looks and if they think that it will meet all of their needs.

If i was offered a Z today for next to nothing would i turn it down? Probably i would not but i would miss the more ergonomic design of the SZ and the better keyboard on the SZ. I would also miss a little the premium weave pattern on the lid as well.

It would be great if Sony continued with the SZ if they did i would probably select it to be my next laptop when it comes to me upgrading.

I will probably stick with my SZ for a while.

I'm curious as to why you say Sony hasn't done well with the specs on the Z? What didn't they do with it that you think they should have.

Nixon I guess that i used the wrong term then because i do think that Sony has done very well with the specs of the Z.

I think the Z did well, it's the SR I'm still placing. It's got a feature set of part of the premium SZ's, but takes things out to get to a lower price point. I like them, but I'm still figuring out where to best fit them.
