According to Sony, I should install driver updates released by Sony only and not Intel. But the graphics driver on Sony's support website is the older version. Can I download Intel's update without messing up my current Windows installation?

The on-screen display of the brightness settings is very much tied to Sony's version of the driver. Use another driver and the onscreen display may not function any more. Some folks have been able to take other drivers and modify the INF file so that this functionality remained intact. There are messages and threads here about folks doing this with Nvidia drivers. But I don't recall seeing anything about this regarding Intel drivers.
