I just upgraded my processor from P8700 to X9100.

One thing I notice is the heat it produces.

Before with P8700 the temp is always around 30-40 when doing work or browsing the Internet

    After using X9100, it's around 50-60c.

Then I run orthos and amazingly surprised the stress test give more than 100c.

I then run throttlestop to adjust the vid to 1.100 and it drops to around 90c.

I only can make the temp lower by changing the multiplyer from 11.5 to 11, making it run slower than the default speed. it gives me around 80c when running orthos and around 45c when browsing the Internet.

my question is, is it normal when we upgrade the cpu to x9100? I know x9100 produces more as the TDW is 44w compared to P8700 which is only 25w.

secondly, if I drop the multiplyer, for example to 10.5, making the speed around 2.8gb, does it also lower the TDP automatically? With 10.5 I can set the vid to 1.000. it runs stable. or I can set the default multiplyer to 11.5 and set the vid to 1.0875 stable also but it produces around 90c when running stress and around 65c when watching movies, around 50 when browsing

is something wrong with the cpu? or maybe I need to change the thermal paste? currently I use artic silver 5. do I have to use diamond ic to lower the temp?

thank you in advace n sorry for my english. hope you guys understand what I write and can give me suggestions.

A T9900 is a better option. Has the exact same specs as the X9100 just with a lower TDP rating.

That said, I'm surprised the CW even manages to run the X9100. I would have thought all hell would have broken loose sticking that into a heat-sink designed for a P series CPU. Heck, I would be surprised if the CW ran the T series at full speed too.

Make sure your thermal paste is approximately even on the top square extrusion of the CPU. Though not too much of it mind you. There is nothing wrong with your X9100. That thing has the capability of consuming double of what your original P8700 is capable of. So such temperatures are expected.

The T9900 would give higher temp readings than your P8700, though I'm sure it won't be as high as the X9100.

Do you notice your machine downclocking the CPU when it reaches a certain temperature? I know the VGN-Z series (the ones which come with the T9900 and bigger heat-sinks to their P series CPU counterparts) only runs at full CPU clock speed at 20 second increments.

    Hi, thanks for the answers.

However, changing to T9900 would require me to sell this one first.

I still keep my P8700 so if this laptop cannot handle it then I'm gonna put the original processor back.

One question though, if I downclock it to 10.5 x 266 (default is 11.5 x 266), then it would give me 2793. Which is about the same speed as P9700. However, the original P9700 TDP is 28w.

If I downclock my x9100, would the TDP also be lowered? I am managed to lower the VID to 1.000 and it runs stable though...

also the diamond ic would help??? currently using AS 5

    thanks

TDP is not only linked to clock frequency, I think that even at the same clock than your P8700, the X9100 will be too hot for your CW's cooling system...
Extreme series are definitely not for laptops.

x9100 is definetely for laptops. it is designed for laptops.

so far, I have underclock and undervolt it.

it runs so cool. it runs around 40 and only 50 when watching movies.

running stress test only around 70.

with the default speed, undervolt, I get around 88 running stress test and around 55 when watching movied.

I just need to decide if I want to go with which speed. throttle stop gives me the option to do that.

now what I need is to apply icd7 which I cannot locate in my country.

any other good thermal paste out there that I can try?

    thanks

Laptop part or not the P8700 is a 25watt part and the X9100 is a 44w (yikes!) part.

There is a VERY REAL chance that your laptop can not dissipate 44W worth of heat. Hell, 44w is as much as a quad-core i7.

And of course undervolting/underclocking will lower the heat dissipation required/energy consumption/tdp.

that's why I am running it at 2.8 now. lower the clock and the volt.

    it's cool now...
