I've got a Sony Vaio VGN-Z17GN and would like to replace my 300GB HD with 512GB SSD. Has anybody done this or similar or know if this is possible ?

With enough $$$, anything is possible.
What makes you think it won't work for you? -
Sony Z works with proprietary SSDs afaik. I'll move this to the Sony forum.

Replacing the HDD buy SSD in he VGN-Z is easyer than replacing it in the VPC-Z. You don't have to take out the SSD from his encloser to do that, just take care when opening your vaio from the DVD side it is very eay to brake but the SSD fits very good. i already done it with my old VGN-Z890 replacing the 320 by 256ssd

AFSIK, it's 2.5 hdd and can be swapped by any 2.5 hdd.
the main hdd is the hdd with label in video above, see at 1:52.
