I have replaced the pre-installed Toshiba 120G 5400g with a WD5000BEVT 500GB on my z540, everything is very good, speed, amazing quiet, no click noise and any other noise. thanks to Phliflow's recommendation.

The temperature of both HDD are almost same from 32c to 36c, depends on how long and how many times you do the test.

However there is a little vibration when file transfer and big softeware installation, just little. For the vibration, I just make a comparison between my z540 and my friend’s Toshiba A605-P200 in which installed a Toshiba 250G 5400rpm, both my friend and I put hands on the notebooks to feel the vibration, We can honestly say they have the same level vibration, just a little, I think that is normal for every HDD except solid HDD .

The vista experience score is risen from 5.3 to 5.8.
The CPU usage is little bit higher than preinstalled one.

For how to replace the HDD on your z540/590, you guys can read the thread as follows, no easy, but not tough too, the toughest thing is getting the keyboard up.

I have installed and reinstalled diferent os becuase there is so large space on the hdd, I am going to install 2 or three os on it (xp + vista + ubantu), Currently, I just install xp on the z540, so I only have the HD tune test result under XP for the new hdd now. I do a several times hd tune tests for both hdd, and choose the highest score to post here.

here is pre-installed Toshiba 120g 5400rpm HD tune result:

and here is the WD5000BEVT 500GB HD tune result; Compare with my desktop Hdd Sata II Samsung 7200rpm, the WD5000BEVT even has little bit better performance than the desktop 7200rpm hdd, except the burst Rate

My Samsung 3 platter at 500gb makes clicking noise.

When is the next 750gb is going to come out? I think I might wait till then.

Are you using special partition to get to linux? I just use Vmware. I am going to install Solaris Desktop using Vmware.

I might want to get HD Tune Pro to compare to your results.

I also use Vmware to run ubuntu becaue i do not often use it, however for xp and vista, I use 2 partitions to install them respectively.
    C: 30gb for xp
    D: 60gb for vista
    E: remaining for Data

I think that is better than use Vmware because:
    1. if one os is crashed, I can use another one immediately before taking time to restore the crashed os.
    2. sine if you use the Vmware in Vista to support a virtual xp os, the xp will definitely be affected by the vista, if the vista is crashed, then the virtual xp is crashed too.
    3. currently, better compatibility for any softwares and games and running faster in xp than vista.
    4. there are a plenty of space in the 500G wd hdd, I donot care the 30gb for xp.

Hi dawn777, may I ask how you dual-booted with Vista and XP? I have an SR that currently has Vista on it, and I wanted to also put XP on it. Mentioned it a couple times in a few threads on the forum but no direct response to it. I have the Vista recovery discs, and that's it (also the XP disc). I read that to install XP after Vista, I'd need the Vista disc to restore the boot menu, but I don't have an original Vista disc.

    Thanks,
    - Eli

    Hi eli2k

I used a Anytime Upgrade DVD of vista and a xp cd to install the dual os, I donot try the recovery disc to install xp or vista, I prefer to make a clean install os because the recovery disc usually contains some bloat wares. maybe there are some diference between them when installing dual os. I donot know that because I just did not try it, sorry about that.

I install xp first, in C:
    then install vista in D:
This is the easet way to realize dual-booted w/ xp and vista.

for your case, if you install vista first and then xp, you have to restore the boot menu by using a Anytime Upgrade DVD of vista to do that.
or you download a software *VistaBoot Pro* that is free software, it is effective. just search, and easy too get it.

Thanks. Would any Vista DVD work, though? A bit iffy about VistaBoot Pro; does this work or will it break it. :p
