I recently upgraded my VAIO VGN-NW240F from Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit to Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit. Everything was going just fine, then I found out that my "Fn" function keys don't work at all and the up/down and left/right scroll feature on the pointing device is not working.

I downloaded the drivers from the Sony support site, but everytime I install, after my VAIO restarts, I end up getting a message saying my battery is either inserted wrong or is the incorrect model for use with the laptop. Well, the battery is fine. I restore to previous settings, and the battery issue is resolved, but the pointer and function keys still won't work.

Anybody experience this issue? Anybody have any ideas?

Ever hear of the SEARCH function on a web forum such as this? Give it a try you'll find the answer.

No kidding. Search? Why didn't I think of that.

Of course I searched. Alot of SIMILAR problems, but none of the solutions I found are working for me.

Now do you actually have something to contribute, or are you just gonna act like you're better than everyone else.

Look at any of the clean install guides here for Vista or Windows 7 and you will see that there are more than just the drivers that need to be installed. There are auxiliary apps/libraries that are also required. In addition the sequence that these are installed in is VERY important.

Look at the clean install guides for the specific apps/libraries and the sequence.

Alright, now that's useful. Thank you.

I have been reading up on bunch of different clean install guides from several different sources. I think I have the basics down.

    - Sony Shared Library
    - Sony Notebook Utilities
    - Ricoh Memory Stick Host Controller Driver (for the "Base System Device" issue)
    - Sony Firmware Extension Parser Device Driver

Not sure if that is all I need. I downloaded all the available drivers and such from the Sony support website (30 files at 439.45 mb total), but they are all for Win 7 Home Premium. I'm trying to figure out what the correct order to install all this stuff and whether or not I should just install all of it.

My big problem is the battery thing. After I install a few of these drivers/apps/libraries and such, I get the "wrong battery or battery installed incorrectly - click me to go into hibernate so you can fix the battery - blah blah blah" message. When this message pops up, I can't do anything else but restore it to previous settings.

    Son of a gun.

    Gary,

You are just the dude I needed tonight. All those other guides blow. Your guide for the FZ190 put me on the right course. For the last 3-4 days I have been trying to get this to work, but it wasn't till you posted and I got a hold of YOUR clean install guide, that I was able to flesh out what needs to be done and in what order. It's so super easy, I feel really stupid now. Thank you.

Everyone else with an NW240 can look forward to my guide which will be up in a day or two.

Again, thank you Gary. See what happens when you put aside the attitude and really help out people. A couple of posts later, now I have my bad*ss VAIO fully functional with Windows 7 Ultimate x64.

Now, if I could only resolve the "TBIA: The data is invalid" M-Audio and Tunebite driver conflict...

It ALL comes down to the proper sequence.

    No.

It comes down to actually installing all the drivers, which sony has in their website, all you have to do is put in the model number and your good to go. Those how to guides are useless, a link to sony's website would be alot more useful.

Oh really? How many clean installs have you done in a Vaio?

Hmmm, is that why Sony gives a specific sequence to install the drivers and apps/libraries? Are you at all aware of the fact that some of these drivers actually have dependencies on the libraries? And so do some of the apps.

Do you have any facts to back up your assertion that the sequence is not important? Our friend here coolguy (aka Rajesh) has done quite a bit of experimentation and has shown that these dependencies do indeed exist.

Hmm, I dunno. I installed them randomly and everything is working perfectly. (Or perhaps they name then in the sequence they're supposed to be installed).

Certain drivers need common sys files...therfore, vga might work with sound cards version of mfc32.dll, while the sound card can't use video cards' file...sometimes you have an explicit conflict

So what exactly did you install? Did you start from a clean install where NONE of the Sony stuff was in place? If you attempt to install a driver or app that requires the shared library, it will not install correctly unless the library is already in place. Outside of such dependencies, you are right the order makes no difference at all.
