Hi, this is my first post as I joined to ask if it is safe to use an SZ on a soft surface. The laptop model is a SZ780DN. I realize the main fan vent is in the back, but I am cautious as this laptop has vents on the bottom. Just wondering, if i put it in stamina mode and low power consumption mode (to minimize heat), if it's safe to use the laptop for extended periods on a soft surface such as a bed. I also have one of those cases that open up like a laptop and is foam on the inside, which are designed so you can use the laptop while it's in the case without having to remove it. The additional beifit of this case is you don't have to worry about scrathing up the bottom when you set it on random school surfaces. However being that it is memory foam, the bottom is completely covered. Wondering if this case is safe to use if the laptop is once again in the low power settings. Thanks,

Generally, it is a good idea to have your notebook sitting on glass or aluminum or something that will dissipate heat. Running with very conservative settings will help to ensure that no damage will come from sitting on a soft cushion, however, if the rear vent is partially blocked as would be the case if the laptop sank into the cushion a bit, than that could be a problem. Many people don't realize that your cpu will slow down if it gets too hot. Thermal control is built into Intel's chips so if your using your machine and it starts heating up than the performance will slow. I don't always use a notebook cooler. Sometimes, when surfing from bed, I use a metal food serving tray that I borrowed from the Hilton hotel. Just use your own judgment here but a good general rule is cooler is better.
