I just upgraded to Vista Home Premium, and after some driver headaches, I believe I have everything working properly. In XP, I had no issues using the built-in camera to capture video and sound into windows movie maker. However, now in Vista, seemingly the only option to capture; "Import From digital video camera" does not detect my built in camera. It gives the error message "Import Video could not find a compatible digital video device. Varify that the digital video device is properly connected and turned on."

How can I get Windows Movie Maker to recognize my camera? It's pretty useless to me if I can't use it to record video. Maybe I didn't get the camera installed properly?

    thank you for any help!

I seem to remember in the VAIO manual that says that the camera isn't supported under Windows Movie Maker.

As far as I can remember.

yeah, i know, but its not vista thats the problem, its windows movie maker. in vista, in the device manager, it lists the camera there and functioning as a camera. but WMM only seems to want to record video from a miniDV input (which works fine with my mini DV camera). is there a way to get the new version of windows movie maker, the one that comes with vista, to recognize and use the built-in camera to record video? if not, are there any other utilities i can use this camera with to record video? because if not, the built in camera becomes entirely worthless.

I disagree, it wouldn't be useless cause YES it does work with MSN Messenger perfectly fine and quite good even though it was low light, the 'Brighter' mode works great. So there's one use for it and I'm sure there are other programs that works with it as well. Like you said yourself, its a stupid Windows program problem (as usual).

after some searching, its WMM's fault, and i hate them now :(

    heres what i found:

" Why am I unable to import video from my Web camera or analog video source?
Import Video does not support importing video from a Web camera or analog video source such as a VCR. To use video from your Web camera, you can use the software that comes with the camera to record the video to your computer."

    F-that. :(

so moving on knowing this, are there any programs that can use the camera to record video? i dont need/care about streaming; just recording.

Yes. The Sony Vaio Camera Capture Utility. It can take picture and video in to .wmv format I think.

    Just use that mate. :)

First things first - I'm from the UK, so things are different.

But I assume that you need the following at least:

:: Sony Visual Communication Camera VGP-VCC2 Driver
    from http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-list.pl?mdl=VGNSZ240P&UpdateType=Original

    and

    ::VAIO Camera Capture Utility
    from http://support.vaio.sony.co.uk/downloads/select/select.asp?site=voe_en_GB_cons&category=0&serie=VGN-SZ&m=2565

Hope this will solve your problem. ;) Had to resolve back to my UK VAIO support site cause it's been so confusing using that US one.
