    Tr series questions:

1.Can anyone tell me how good psx and n64 emulation is on the tr2 or tr5?
2.What scores does it get in 3dmark01/03?
3.Are there any problems/issues with any of the TR series notebooks?

    V/S series questions:

1.Is it worth waiting for the S series over the V series and what are the differences apart from screen size?
2.Can you play games like Farcry and UT2004 at low-medium settings?
3.Are there any problems/issues with any of the V series notebooks?

    Thanks

On the TR front, I went with the Fujitsu P5020 because I think it's a better machine at a cheaper price. I've never tried to run those emulators, but I couldn't imagine any of the TRs having a problem with them. My biggest issues with the TR are lack of upgrade options, no flexible bay and the price.

    1. I'd imagine that the S series will probably have the faster (Dothan) processors available while the V series will be retired. That's my guess, anything can (and will) happen.

    2. Can't comment, I don't play either of those games. Not that this would help (well maybe), but on my v505 SimCity 4 runs fine at normal settings, Command and Conquer Generals runs fine at 800x600 and a medium level of detail, and Rise of Nations run fines at 1024x768 at full detail.

    3. I don't have any issues with my v505....love it. I've seen posts concerning models that have the built-in wireless option. The posts reference a concern that the wireless generates a good amount of heat, although no one has complained it's damaged their machine. I'd imagine that using a 802.11b PC-Card generates the same amount of heat if not more. Other that that concern, I haven't seen any complaints and I certainly have no complaints about mine.

Don't know if this helps, but I can run MAME on my Z505JS (P3-650MHz, 128MB RAM) fairly well, except some games with huge ROM files (30 MB+). My wife's GRX-550 (P4M-1.6GHz, 512MB RAM, Radeon 7500 32MB RAM) has no problem at all. Maybe you can extrapolate PSX & N64 emulation performance from there...[8D]

Thanks for the info! I've narrowed my choices down to the sony s series and the panasonic r3. I just have to rethink of my main priorities for a laptop [ :D]. I had a brief moment with the acer 3200 (they did a good job of attracting attention[ :p]) but it was far too heavy (3kgs). My current laptop is a compaq pressario 900 which, according to my scale, weighs 3.12kgs. I'm now looking for something under 2kgs. Screen size between 10 and 13 inch, but I may stretch to 14 if it has a small footprint. Hard drive capacity is not important (I have many externals). Optical drive unimportant. Processor speed as high as possible and any video card would be nice considering the small size. Preferably intergrated wireless but pcimia cards aren't expensive anyway. Battery life is usually quite good with small laptops (the r3 has an 8 hour standard battery life and total weight is only one kilogram!!!). Um...I think thats it. Oh, price is not a problem, I have a lot of crap to sell [ :D].

    V/S series questions:

1.Is it worth waiting for the S series over the V series and what are the differences apart from screen size?

Yes, the graphics card is the biggest jump. You are jumping from a MR 9200 with 32 MB to a MR 9700 with 64 MB.

2.Can you play games like Farcry and UT2004 at low-medium settings?

With a Mobility Radeon 9700, you can play those easily at medium settings smoothly. Check a review for exact numbers. I'll cite one here. It can play Halo (DX9 game) at 1024 x 768, with some AA/AF enabled at over 30 FPS. Those are medium settings right?

3.Are there any problems/issues with any of the V series notebooks?

Don't own a V series myself, but I've seen many kids at my school own them. They were all very satisfied with the choice.

Well my post was a little distorted by the fact that I thought the s series only came with 9200 radeons. A little flick over the press release to see what the hell eliwood was talking about, and yes, the top model of the s series does come with the 9700. This will be THE best <2kgs gaming notebook ever. The press release and the japanese site have the weight at 1.89kgs. Of course this is an immediate entry into my battle of notebooks. I now have to choose between the r3 (the weight and battery life is out of this world) and the s series (best graphics:weight ratio ever). Price is becoming a slight issue (wasn't before). Over the past 4 months I have amassed £850 by selling random crap in my room including 3 game consoles, 2 mp3 players and hundreds of cds full of absolutely nothing (not really, just don't know what organizations (RIAA in particular) lurk on these forums[ :p]). Got a birthday and another hundred blank cds coming so all is not lost. Might sell my pc anyway (getting on a bit).

PLEASE... Could you link me to the page where it says S-series have a Radeon 9700? I really really want a stylish 13/14" laptop with a very good video card.

Available everywhere in the world right now except for North America. Sucks to be in the US or Canada. We always get things last.

Here's a spec sheet for that particular laptop.

Pretty good for 2002 isn't it?
