VGN-NR21S. On starting-up, VAIO start-up image slightly distorted and then next screen with scrolling green bar has vertical dotted blue lines throughout and stops. Works in safe mode with no obvious visual disturbance. Tried various restore points - no joy. Screen then worked for one occasion for few seconds then went blank. If it works in safe mode - surely that means the hardware is all fine? Any ideas please. Desparately need to get some files of hard-disk.

It sounds like the GPU could be dying. Is your model one of the ones affected by the faulty video chips? safe mode sometimes works because the display is running at a minimum resolution.
