I am trying to enable VT on my VGN-AR71ZU. I know from other members that the register that I need to change is definitely 0285 = 0001

I now realise that there is a problem with my use of symcmos.

Even when I reset the BIOS to the default settings, and take a literal of the registers, then boot to DOS and -u with the exact same file, the machine doesn't boot on the first attempt.

It does however on the second boot attempt, and the settings are reset to the BIOS defaults (i.e. I've tested this with some alternate settings like "Show RAID configuration" which are removed in this process)

So, what am I doing wrong with symcmos? Is there a version problem, or am I just doing something so wrong that directly reimporting the file I just exported from the BIOS causes a boot failure?

Is there a different util that might be better (now knowing that I have the right register?)

The problem was due to the fact that I was preparing the files from symcmos in windows.

using a USB flash drive, I was able to use the DOS 6.22 EDIT command to do the work and am all happy now.

For the record, BIOS R2090J8 found in Sony VAIO models (mine = VGN-AR71ZU) can have VT enabled at register 0285 by setting it to 0001.

This information came from another member on this forum - Thanks!
