I have a two year old Sony VAIO (not sure about the model but don't think it matters) and was getting ready to use a USB Flash drive.......when I restarted the computer after inserting the flashdrive (it asked to restart the computer for the flashdrive to work properly) , it would boot but it wouldn't go all the way through to desktop screen. It went to the logon screen (which it never used to do) and when I clicked on my name it would say "loading your settings" and then my desktop screen would appear for a second and then I would get the "logging off, saving your settings message. Help please if you can. Can't really afford to take it in. If you can help or direct me to somewhere I could find the answer, I would appreciate it.

    Thanks

    Dave

Could be a bad HDD. Try running scandisk.

Don't I have to be logged in or get to "my computer" to run scandisk?

    Thanks

Go into F2 or F12, and look for boot devices or boot order, and make sure that your HD is there and not the USB stick.

When you are booting the notebook, hit F8 repeatedly until you are given the windows prompt for what version you want to log into. If the problem is caused by something software such as a messed up setting when the driver/software from your flash drive was installed or something malware related, you should be able to select safe mode and not only set to do a scan disk on the following reboot, but should also have access to windows built in recovery panel to try rolling back the computer to before you installed the flash drive driver to check and see if that fixes the problem.
