I bought my VGN-C140 about a month ago and it doesnt seem to be fast at all. There are times when it doesnt seem any faster than my old laptop, (Athlon64 3400+ 1.2GB RAM). I uninstalled most of the crap that sony put on it and it still seems to drag. I dont mind boosting the RAM up to 2GB but maybe thats not the issue?

What are you doing with it? What are you using it for? I don't think a ram upgrade will help if it feels slow now.

Can you run some benchmarks such as super pi or pcmark05? then you can compare them to benchmarks in the review on this site to make sure nothing is wrong with your machine.
