I Just bought Sony CR Notebook, it has 250 GB HDD, which has two partitions (one 9 GB partition for backup[i think] and one drive 220 GB which contain Vista Home Premium SP1 ). I wanted to know can i partition 220 GB "C:/" drive into drives of 50 GBs, without endangering Vista ?

Also how can i restore (from 9 GB backup drive) windows if some problem occurs in future ?

The 9GB partition is the VAIO Recovery Partition. If you haven't already done so create your recovery DVDs. If the parition gets wiped you can use the DVDs to restore it.

The Vista partition can be shrunk and new logical partitions created in the free extended space. Vista (C:\) won't be affected but you will have to go into disk management and format and possibly change drive letters, that's if you like your optical and flash drives at the end of the list.

Also, make sure the partition tool you use preserves the data. Most new tools do but some older tools used to destroy data even if you only resized or moved the partition.

GParted is a free app which you can use to partition your hdd. I use it often; it's easy to use and a solid app. Can't make a comparison to Partition Magic, which I've read is very good, because I've never used it.
