Hi guys, I've just purchased a VAIO E Series lappy (VPC-EC1S1E/BJ)
It has space for two internal hard drives but is only supplied with one. I'd like to add another internal drive, but the official Sony line is "We have no note of any upgrade path" involving the drives.
Does anyone out there have any info? The bay/caddy is there - It just seems to need a ribbon cable for power/data...
Thanks in advance...

I have similar problem with my E-serie, in fact sony sales person told me that this is easy during my purchase. Just to find out later that there is connector for the second HDD in the bay/caddy.
A company newmodeUS that makes customized caddies told me they are working developing such cables and will inform me when it is ready.
By the way, I don't want to lose my BluRay writer just to have an additional HDD in the optical bay.
Keep your fingers crossed

I know this thread is a few months old, but, I just came across your question, so I joined the forum to give you an answer.
You need to order a dual controller - but you can't get it from Sony. I just received one today. I ordered it from Fulton Radio Supply (in Michigan). Call 517-394-5310 and ask for Jeff. With shipping and handling, it'll run you about $82.
The model number on the package is: M980 Sata HDD FPC
The part number on the package is: A1766534A
I tried getting this info from Sony, but after an e-mail and a phone call, what I got was the phone number above. Jeff was very helpful and tracked down the part.
I installed it in my new VAIO VPCEC2TFX/WI and it works fine (so far).
