Thanks so much guys, especially spielnicht, for creating this guide. I, too, just upgraded to Windows 7 on my FW290C. Only the AV Mode doesn't seem to work. There seems to be a newer shared file library for my model on sony's website though I noticed that while installing one version after the other, the upgrades prompted me to either 1)reinstall them or 2)confirm that installation was good.

I've got a separate question though, have you guys found out how to get around the battery drain problem Vaio users have been experiencing?

    Many thanks.

Battery drain is frickin' awful on mine. Drives me nuts. I lose roughly 20% overnight, in as little as 6 hours

When I upgraded my FW290C's bios last night, I noticed the battery care setting at 50% (which I had when running Vista) was overridden and that the battery was being charged to 100%.

I shut down my Vaio early morning today and did not activate the battery care setting in Windows 7 yet. I will report the drain later when I reach home.

97% remaining after having been shut down for about 11-12 hours. Trying hibernate this time.

Awesome, looks like I'm gonna be using this guide when a 7200 RPM 1 TB Notebook HD comes out. I'm planning to do a clean Windows 7 install on it!

Hello guys, is there any place where I can download some of the software that was originally installed on my vaio?

Things like Webcam Companion, WinDVD BD for Vaio?

There is no links on the UK Vaio support site. My model is VGN-FW31M.

i tried installing the motherboard driver but it said it may have not installed correctly so i tried installing using recommended settings and it said "this is only valid with windows vista" or something along those lines.

I had the same problem. I noticed there was a newer driver for my FW so I downloaded that. Upon installation, Windows 7 gave a warning about it not having installed properly but it was the same message after I installed the driver that came with the zip file.

Hi All - I have installed a clean windows 7 Ultimate 64bit system. It's on a new FW-590FEB. My AV Mode isn't working. When I have the computer running normal and push the av key a box comes up saying I don't have Sony Home Network installed. Anyone got any help for this?

    Thank You
    Harold

Hi, this is Ricoh Memory Stick Host Controller. The driver for Ricoh Ms in the first post did not help me, so I downloaded the driver from Sony and manually installed it.

Has anybody noticed that the laptop in W7 is heating more than in Vista? In my case the most heat comes from the touchpad area (from the bottom). In Vista was the laptop hardly warm, but now is really hot... :(

I want to update my hard drive (replacing a 500 GB 4200 RPM with a 320 GB 7200 RPM) and then do a clean install of Windows 7. My question is when I replace the hard drive, it won't have an operating system installed, can use a Windows 7 upgrade package to do a clean install with no operating system installed on the hard drive? I have the product key for the Windows Vista software installed on my laptop when I bought it.

One last question, once I load the operating system, how do I reinstall Microsoft Works and ArcSoft Web Cam software that came installed on my laptop when I bought it?

Anybody having problems when connecting to an external monitor through HDMI?
I can't do it with Windows 7. Other than that everything seems to be working perfectly.

Thank you very much for putting this great resource together. I almost gave up and reverted back to Vista before stumbling on it.

I want to add that you can download SmartWi, the connections manager, from this link ftp://download.sony.com/US/pc/SOAOTH-00175575-US.EXE. This allows you to switch Bluetooth and WiFi on and off conveniently and separately.

Mighty noble of you to take the time to provide such a packaged driver set for those less undeserving customer care from Sony.

I just recently finally upgraded my fw series to Win7. I was surprised by the lack of support by sony, but then came across your post and its been a lifesaver.

I felt compelled to register to just post a thank you for your help. Taking the time to put together all the drivers in a convenient zip file was much appreciated. Thanks again!

    Hello all,

I am very exiting to see this box to ask something about Laptop. Actually, I am using Sony VAIO VGN-FE790P with CPU Intel Core 2, Ram 1G, HD 320G. But I cannot find the driver for windows 7 Supreme 64 bit. If anyone know how to get the drivers supporting my laptop and if you don't mind please don't hesitate to share with me.

    Best wish,

    Neavea
