    HI There,

I followed your guide, but I'm not able to get HDMI audio to work.

Under the HDMI preferences pane, no encoded formats appear. Previously with the factory installed Vista, I would see Dolby, DTS, etc.

appreciate any help you'll can offer.

    Cheers,

Thanks, I know you can't use RC keys on RTM versions but my question was whether I can use my vista 64 bit key on a Windows7 Home Premium RTM (not the upgrade disk). I only said I have used the RC version because you mentioned that I try the free trial.

At any rate, my buddy was able to get me a product key since he's a member on technet (since they can get about 10 keys per OS). I was able to successfully install Windows 7 Ultimate x64. I basically followed the directions on this thread but Windows 7 already has all the drivers. I won't take credit for what has already been said but just to recap after you installed Windows 7 these drivers need to be installed since W7 doesn't have these:

    1) Install the Sony Firmware Extencion Parser
    2) Setting Utilities Series
    3) VAIO Control Center
    4) VAIO Event Service
    5) VAIO Power Management
    6) Sony Shared Library (yes, this is the one you need to get the Fn keys working properly as well as the shortcut keys. These keys would not work until after I installed it)
    7) ATI HDMI audio drivers from Realteks website
    8) ATI CCC and GPU drivers

And that's it. You don't need to install all the stuff that the first post had, just the 8 above.

    @trojanwr21

    VGN-FW290, Windows 7 Ultimate x64 RTM.

Clean install + Sony Vista x64 drivers as described above, the Fn and Shortcut keys are all working, brightness and volume OSD.

(Only the "AV Mode" key is non-functional, I don;t want to install VAIO launcher, does anyone know how to map this key to launch a program, media player, itunes etc..)

Problems with Windows 7 'default' drivers:

    1) Internal microphone not working in all apps. Fixed with latest Realtek Windows 7 driver.
    http://www.realtek.com/downloads/do...=24&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false

    2) Bluetooth, only has Dial-Up profile, no OBEX, Audio or Sync. Fixed by
    i) Install Sony Bluetooth driver:
    http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-download.pl?upd_id=4703&os_id=34
ii) Then update to latest Braodcom driver with update utility:

Why not just install VAIO Launcher, that is the only function it provides. What's the downside to installing it?

    t-bon3,

My AV button is working and I didn't even install the Vaio Launcher....weird. As for the microphone problem, I noticed that too. I installed the Realtek drivers then looked up the microphone profile and it defaulted to the one that Windows 7 installed. It showed 2 profiles and the one that W7 installed doesn't work for some reason so I manually uninstalled that and set the Realtek driver as the default then everything started working.

I didn't check on the bluetooth yet but thanks for posting that tip. I'll update my bluetooth driver anyways to something more recent.

I have a Vaio VGN-CS16G/R and why is is that after installing Win7 RTM x64 and installing the necessary drivers, I DON'T see the "adjust brightness slider" on the power options? With my other laptops with the same OS, I can see that slider completely.

Also, I when I install Vaio Launcher which I got from the extracted Sony Notebook Utilities installer, it returns an error of:

    " Error Number: 0x80040703
Description: Failed to find DLL function: SnyUtils.SuOpen

    Setup will now terminate. "

    Are there workarounds on this?

You need to install the GPU driver for the brightness control.

I already did install the GPU driver for my Nvidia Geforce 9300M GS.

The official 186.81 NVIDIA drivers doesn't seem to work and returns the unrecognizable hardware error so I downloaded from laptopvideo2go and installed it. Still no success.

Even with the nvidia driver from windows update it doesn't seem to add that brightness control.

    What can I do?

I'm guessing you didn't read my post in the previous page :) I have the VGN-CS16G/R, I'm sorry if I posted here but I couldn't find an official thread for the VAIO CS series and I'm assuming that the installation of Win7 to both laptops are fairly the same, yes?

OHH  sorry I missed that. Have you tried using drivers from www.laptopvideo2go.com? What you do is download a driver, then download the modified INF that goes with it, then extract the driver and put the modified INF in the folder, then start the setup. I tried this on a Sony AW and it worked, but I had to use one of the 186.xx series drivers. I would experiment around with those drivers and see if any work for you.

Yeah I've tried using the 191.00 from laptop2videogo but it gave me the same result. I have yet to try the 186.xx drivers.

How about with the VAIO launcher software, do you have any ideas of the error I mentioned?

    Thanks man,

in fact I did this already and apparently I have some problems (with the bluetooth for one, it can't be switched on and off via wireless switch utility, it's just missing, and I have two unrecognised device in the device maganer as well...), that's why I've asked this...

One more question: I really need some of the old softwares (sonicstage mastering studio) but there's no way to find them on the internet (or at least I can't find it), but I have it on my old vista-based recovery partition. Is it possible somehow to reinstall these from there?

    Thank you!

I'm having a bit of trouble following this guide. I downloaded all of the files from the Sony Support website and I downloaded Universal Extractor. When I try to extract the setup files, I get some unrecognised file type error. My model is the VGN-FW455J and the files are x64.

Thanks again for all the help that's on the site.

Having just installed Windows 7 Ultimate on my FW170J, I'll share my experience. I did a clean install, using the same partition that my Vista Home Premium was on. I purposefully left the recovery partition alone. After installation, I looked to see which devices hadn't had drivers installed. There were two. Unknown device and base system device. Unknown device was solved by installing the latest SFEP driver. Base system device was solved by installing the memory card and memory stick drivers.

The only buttons that I can't get to work are the brightness up and down Fn buttons, and the AV Mode and S1 buttons. I would like the brightness buttons, but I can get by without them. And it saves me installed more crappy Sony software.

The best part is that without relying on Sony for drivers, my devices work as they should without any problems. Most specifically, my HDMI port just does what its supposed to. Updates solved a few of the issues I had with it when it was under Sony control, but it still was inconsistent and certain TV's wouldn't display it's output. Now, I have no problems. I connect it to a TV and it works. And if it doesn't work, it doesn't automatically switch to the TV as the single display even though its outputting an incorrect resolution that the TV can't handle. It stays on my laptop's display.

Update: I went ahead an installed the latest Sony Shared Library and Vaio Event Service to get all of my Fn buttons to work properly. The screen brightness buttons were more necessary than I thought they would be. I felt I could sacrifice 25 MB of my 4 GB for the convenience.

I was worried about getting WinDVD bd for Vaio reinstalled, but took the chance. I used the installer that this guy extracted from his recovery partition:

    http://anebg.net/2009/09/20/intervideo-windvd-bd-for-vaio/

and it worked perfectly. The only thing I had to do was get the AAC key or whatever updated. I used the right-click and run as Administrator trick that I've seen on here before and it worked. I was ecstatic.

So now here I am with a fully functioning Vaio including a blu-ray player running Windows7 after basically no effort. Plus I don't have any Sony software on it, which I see as a plus. Screen brightness buttons are the only thing I'm missing.

So Windows 7 is officially out today but to my disappointment, Sony decided not to support my FW140D because it doesn't "meet the minimum requirements".. whatever that means so I was wondering if anyone successfully installed 7 RTM on their FW using this guide and in general, if this guide works with the RTM version.

Also, does anyone have a general list of the common utilities needed by the FW that I may be able to find under the support section for newer FWs (such as the FW2xx, FW3xx, etc.) and they have to be 32-bit (because I know newer FWs come with Vista 64-bit only).

Likewise on my FW140E. How can a PC that is only one year old and ran the beta just fine not be supported?

I don't fancy purchasing the full version of Windows 7 just to see that Sony are telling the truth - has anyone tried Windows 7 (64 bit) on theirs FW140E?

    Thanks,

I was thinking of trying to find the various utilities needed from the other FW pages (such as FW3xx and FW4xx) and follow Sony's instructions for installing them, though they have them in a different order from that listed at the beginning of this thread. It's also a problem since I need the 32-bit version and most people use the 64-bit one.

I can get a trial copy of 7 for now and play around with it and see how it works.

I just installed a fresh copy of Windows 7 Ultimate on my FW139E.
I installed ATI driver from AMD website and it works great.
I downloaded Sony Utilitites from FW590, trick model.txt file to install and everything works just fine.
The picture shows what I have downloaded and installed.

Hi, what did you mean by "trick model.txt file"? I tried installing the Sony Notebook Utilities from the FW590 on my FW11 and it said unsupported model!

I think what you've done would help me out!

If you don't trick the model.txt file, setup files will say that.
    What you need to do:
    1. Open notepad with administrator right (right click and Run As Administrator)
    2. Click on the file you want to install to run it. HANG ON
    3. Go to notepad, open to Windows folder, you will see Model.txt file and open it. You will see Model = "VGN-FW11" (in your case).
    4. Change FW11 to FW590 and save
    5. Go back to running sony setup file and click on Next to continue.
You will not see unsupported model report any more because it's seeing your laptop is FW590 (setup file looks into Model.txt file)
Do have to do all 5 steps for each installation.

I am not sure if you already know how to install this.
    Anyway, here is the instruction
You go to device manager and look for Unknown Device which has HardwareIds of ACPI\SNY5001 (Device Properties -> Details -> drop down list box and select Hardware Ids.
Then lick on Update driver or install driver. Click on browse for driver to your driver location and it will install it.

I had installed Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit on my FW390 (clean install). Upon completion, I checked on the device manager and found two things had exclamation mark next to it. They are "Base System Device" and "Unknown Device". Sony support analyst asked me to install the Chipset Intel Driver and Sony Device Parser Driver which I did, and the "Unknown Device" disappeared, but the "Base System Device" was still there. I read from post here that it's the card reader, so I downloaded and installed the driver for that, but still not solving the issue. Please help. Thanks in advance.

All the buttons work (Volume, Pause/Play, FN keys: Brightness, LCD switching, etc.)? Also, what order did you install them? Did you use the thread's order or Sony's? Lastly, nothing is left with an exclamation mark in Device Manager?

Don't follow Sony's order. They don't even have SFEP driver listed (which is a must for fn key functionality).

    Absolutely YES!
    S, Volumn + - work
FN keys Brightness and LCD switching work
Pause/Play and Skip buttons work with Windows Media Player
The order, I installed all drivers first, then
    Sony Shared Library

I want to update the fw139e on win7. Tell me please, updating with microsoft.com will approach? Officially I have received the answer - sorry that the VGN-FW139e is not supported for Windows 7.
Now I live outside of States, and for updating purchase it's necessary to specify a home address in States, Something comes on the specified address? How there is a loading? How the key is given at purchase through the Internet?

I also have FW139E and it is running Windows 7 Ultimate.
You can read my posts for completing driver and sony utilities installation.
You also need to have a Windows 7 Setup disc first. You can buy it now.

Rather than doing a clean install I have simply done the following:

    1) Performed a system recovery with my original vista recovery disks.
    2) Made sure that when Vista is reinstalled it doesnt perform any updates.
    3) Uninstalled any Sony bloatware that I didn't want.
    4) Upgraded to Windows 7

...and hey presto, everything works perfectly. No faffing with drivers and even vaio update still works. Plus you get the option of keeping any original programs that came with your Vaio.

I have done both a clean install and an upgrade and both seem to take up the same amount of space on the 'C' drive (apart from the few Vaio programs that I did want to keep including Click to BD).

Upgrading was far less hassle and my machine is still faster now and less bloated than it ever was before.

    Cheers :)
