I am currently trying to get an FX101 into a usable state, firstly by upgrading the memory - 64mb is a joke these days. That looks quite straightforward, but a more serious issue is the CDROM drive, as it intermittently fails to be recognised and gives random errors.

I have flashed the BIOS with the most up to date XP version, but the BIOS still seems rudimentary to say the least.

My real question is - would it be possible to install a DVD drive, or DVD-RW to replace the CDROM. Is there a generic replacement drive or does it need a specific Sony type for fittings, etc.

If I did manage to fit it, is it a Catch 22 with BIOS support - would the BIOS recognise it as a DVD?
