Hello, I bought my VAIO FZ about 5 months ago (it's VGN-FZ190) and it has a cd/dvd/blue ray disc drive. About a month ago, it stopped reading discs of any kind and vista doesn't recognize whatever I put in. I try to open it from my computer but it just ejects my tray and says to insert a disc. I've tried putting in Ratatouille (BR), Crash (DVD), and my old Grand Theft Auto game (CD) and none of them show up. The drive appears to be fine in device manager too. I've tried going to the BIOS menu and don't see any options to turn it on/off. It's set to #1 in the booting order and doesn't autostart when I have my windows install cd in there.

The thing is that I actually got it working again somehow: I messed around with my installed programs (like uninstalling nero, magiciso, etc) and rolling back to the earliest restore point, and reinstalled via device manager. Nothing worked at the time so I gave up on it that night but in the morning it magically worked again.

I reinstalled vista and it was fine for a while, but now I'm confronted with the same issue, except I tried the same stuff and nothings working.

Anyone know what's going on??
Thanks in advance for your help!

I think if you do a search of cd/dvd not working on the forum, you might find something...it's related to a certain program (i don't remember nero or roxio) that you uninstall...there's a microsoft article or fix or something..

Tried this process like 10 times, doesn't work :( . I even uninstalled all cd/dvd related programs and rolled back to my earliest system restore but still no success.

the problem mentioned above happens when you uninstall roxio form sony. Here the cd drive is not even available in the explorer. so this is not the problem you are having.
You probabily have a dirty drive or that it is not working properly. try to get it serviced.

I think you might be right. My blu-ray started working again somehow, but the cd/dvd is still broken. I think it could be dirty laser heads? Anybody know a good guide for cleaning them/ what to use?
