I recently purchased the Sony VAIO VPCF13YFC and would first like to say that I love this computer. Sure, the speakers could be better and the backlight on the keyboard could be under the control of a separate key (i.e. low, med, high, if Sony is reading) instead of the sensor, but overall I am very pleased with this computer.
I wanted to put out an FYI should anyone else run across an issue I was having with my VAIO Laptop while an external USB drive was attached (my previous laptop did not exhibit this behavior). It may be applicable to other Sony models as well. I did not change my Bios settings before or after this FYI and it may have solved this problem as well.
Upon a restart (warm boot) I noticed that it would hang at a blank screen with the cursor blinking in the top left portion of the screen. There were no messages on the screen and I soon realized that the only way to solve the problem was to completely shut down and start the computer via the power button. I then turned to Google and found this link... Sony PC boot sequence hangs at Vaio logo when there is a USB external - Microsoft Answers and disconnected my external USB drive to test it out. ISSUE RESOLVED.
I wanted to share this information with anyone else out there who may have encountered this same situation.

I suppose this is place to describe your problem what you need http://forum.notebookreview.com/son...io-f-series-i5-i7-owners-thread-part-5-a.html
PS What exact usb drive you are talking about? hdd or what? Do you know that if you use it oftenly you can buy Fenvi "2nd hdd caddy" on eBay? It costs less than 20$ shipped -
I'm curious as to your boot order in BIOS. External should be disabled and at the bottom of the priority list, to keep your system from looking at anything other than the internal HDD for booting.
Another thing... let's say that the external HDD has been idle for too long and has been put to sleep by your VAIO (stopped spinning). You'd have to wait for it to spin up before it could be read. I have this with my external 2TB drive w/ all of my movies. Since it let it sleep, it takes a few seconds to spin up anytime I want to browse it. It also takes a few seconds for certain programs to open that would query from that drive, but only while it's been spun down.
