I think the DVD drive on my VAIO (VPCSA21GX) is dead, but I wanted to check in with you smart people here at Notebook Review to see if you have any ideas of what I could do to fix it before I went and bought a replacement.

The drive won't recognize any discs. I don't think it's even spinning up fully. When I put a disc in it starts spinning and then clicks a couple times and stops spinning. It does this ~4 times in quick succession and then stops. It doesn't sound bad when it's spinning. And the clicks it lets out before stopping don't sound bad either. But it stops spinning too soon for me to believe that it even really tried to read the disc. I don't think it's a Windows issue, because I tried it with a bootable disc at startup and had the same problem.

Does anyone have any troubleshooting advice?

Any drive with SATA connector, 9.5mm height, and tray loading will work.
