I'm doing a clean install on my new VAIO SE. Prior to wiping the factory OS an on-screen display would show the volume or brightness levels when they were being adjusted, but I can't figure out how to get those back following my new windows install. I'm hesitant to install all of the VAIO software because I don't want it to be too bloated, but how can I reinstall the on screen display?

Have you looked at the clean install guides for your model? There should be a link in the sticky thread - second thread on the Sony index page.

Thanks for the reply anytimer. I did look through that thread but it doesn't seem as though an install guide exists for the SE series. Am I overlooking it? Or, is another model similar enough to the SE to also apply to the SE? I'm new to the VAIO world, so all of these different nomenclatures are confusing right now!

Basically, you go to the support site for your model, and download the drivers there. Most of the time the order in which they are listed there is the order in which they have to be installed. What you are looking for is the Fn key functionality. To get that, you need to install:
SFEP (Sony Firmware Extension Parser) (not sure if you really need this, but doesn't hurt anything, so I install it anyway)
    Setting Utility series.
    Sony Shared Library
    VAIO Event Service.

    The order is important.

As anytimer said, but the Sony shared library should be installed before the Setting utility series (or Sony notebook utilities).

I appreciate the responses guys. What is the "Setting utility series"? I don't see anything by that name on my driver page. The same goes for "VAIO event service", which I can't find anywhere including in the list of Services on the laptop itself.

What is the model number of your SE? Can you link the support page?

Just go through the list - expand each section. The sony shared library and SFEP are under system components. Install these first, then install sony notebook utilities found under notebook control and utilities.

You can install the Sony notebook utilities here Sony eSupport - VPCSE13FX - Drivers & Software

As mentioned, you need to install the Sony shared library before installing the utilities. Don't forget to install the SFEP and the GPU drivers.
