my pcmcia slot is bad on this elderly classic so i can't use the original SONY CDROM - and i want to be able to boot up using the system recovery disks from a LaCie CDRW firewire drive. i have made a bootable floppy disk in my USB port using <<rawrite.exe>> but i don't know the proper script in config.sys to direct the startup to the LaCie firewire drive in the firewire port. i could use some assistance. i'm not all that literate working in DOS and i need some pretty exact directions and script for the firewire port and drive.
many thanks.

Oh wow,
This is a rare type of request.
There's probably a hell lot more USB drivers for DOS compared to firewire drivers...
Do you have USB external CD ROMs?
They would help you a lot more...
(My guess is that you're firewiring because you're on USB1?) -
thanks for responding. no, i don't have a USB external CD Rom. just the firewire right now. my single USB port has the boot floopy to make this work i guess i could get a USB hub and an external CD Rom if thats the only way to do this? there was a great article written about this in 2001 but they lost me when it came to what script to add to config.sys to direct the startup to the non SONY CDRom.

Hi Roy,
Sorry I wasn't much of a help.
Firewire technology, while clearly superior, was passed over by Micro in their selfish defense of USB so I never really tinkered with it.
Best of luck with your search... -
Hi. Was having the same problem using Vaio SR7K. Your email was the only one on the internet. I guess others don't have the same problem????
Well, I tried everything, even with a Firewire Driver for DOS. (you can find the driver or even a startup dos with firewire on the web but only 2 sites have it... that's it!!!)
My goal is to install Window XP and luckily, I came across Microsoft's download centre. This is the last place I would expect but Microsoft did one good thing this time.
You can download "Windows XP Setup boot disks."
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q310994
And VOILA!!! follow the instruction and you can access Firewire / 1394.
Hope this helps. Good Luck.
