Hey everyone first time poster.
I am lucky enough to have TWO VGN-TT198U's sitting on my desk at work...that we got for free (on loan from Sony for evaluation/demo).
I'm trying to see how well I can reconstruct the image to be a usable business machine without all the Sony/AOL crap everywhere.
I've gotten vanilla Ultimate reinstalled (Installs didn't work with Enterprise, sadly), all the buttons working and all Unknown devices found. Also got WinDVD and Blu-Ray working fine. I have Restore discs I made from the second stock TT I have and was able to install most everything...but I must have missed whatever is doing auto-dimming. Thinking it might be nice because it does help with the battery life.
Also, the noise cancelling headphones don't seem to be working correctly...the tray app that detects them is missing...what installer do I need for that?
FYI, the main reason I headed down this path was that WiFi was an utter nightmare to get working...I had to go into the VAIO Wireless Wizard and click 'Current Connections' to even get the WiFi to see any networks. After uninstalling the Wizard, it couldn't see ANYTHING. EVER. Anyone have a good fix for this? I might just be able to handle the much easier 'uninstall crap' route if I can find a good fix for that.

I am not clear what exactly you have done in reformat. Did you use the recovery discs to do the reformat?
If so, you still have the vaio recovery center. Go to start-program-vaio recovery center-reinstall programs and drivers. You should be able to fins whatever program and drivers that came with the TT.
If you did not use the recovery discs, then you have to do it again. Put recovery disc 1 in and restart.
1. After it boots, I chose to reinstall complete system.
2. Answer "no" to question on keeping factory default C drive. It will give you a choice to partition the drive. I chose 40 GB for c drive.
3. Answer "no" to question on keeping factory default programs on C
It goes on to install windows, and reboots. Then a screen comes up saying that it has finished with installing windows, and will procede to install programs. I hit "cancel" This stops it from installing any of the sony's programs and drivers.
After this you can run the vaio recovery center, and choose to re-install programs and drivers. A screen comes up to give you all the choices of programs and drivers. It is all there. -
I did not use the Recovery Center to reimage, I used a Windows Vista Ultimate disc. I have Recovery Center on the 3 DVDs and I have installed many things, but it still doesn't seem to add these two things. Do you know specifically what drivers/programs I need to install for this?

Figured out the noise cancelling. The Realtek audio driver on Sony's website doesn't contact the Noise cancelling app (vncutil.exe) but the one on the recovery disc does.
Still need auto-dimming functionality... -
OK, I've made more progress. I figured out it was in VAIO Control Center, which is a part of the Notebook Utilities package...apparently it didn't install correctly before. Now it's installed and I have SOME functionality in Control Center but about half of the tabs don't work, most importantly the dimmer one doesn't...but the app stalls and eventually recovers.

I have installed WIN7 RC1. My auto dimmer works. When I did it earlier this year, I found all the drivers from Sony, and one of them is SOASUS -00163993 Settings Utility Update. Do you have something like that?
Also, I installed Sony Notebook Utilities
SOAOTH-45200000.
