So.....the Vaio TZ will be slimmer (on average) than the TX with the smaller battery?
    http://www.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.vaio.sony.co.jp%2FProducts%2FTZ1%2Fgallery.html&langpair=ja%7Cen&hl=en&ie=UTF8

Volume of Sony Vaio TX: 80.3 cubic inches.
Volume of Sony Vaio TZ: Holy sh*t! 75.5 cubic inches!
We have the new smallest laptop with integrated ODD!!

Looks like the TZ is going Apple by making the front as thin as the back. I love you, Sony. You're my idol.

Rahulnirmal will drool for days with this baby!

    TZ: front - 22.5mm back - 22.5m

    TX: front - 21mm back - 28.5mm

Did you know that apple actually ask Sony's mechanical designer to help them design their macbook.

Engadget has more info on it, apparently, it can use a 160 gig standard hard drive AND a 32 gig SSD or any 2.5 AND 1.8 hard drive!?!?!?

You have to take out the optical drive to put in the 2.5" hard drive, FINALLY they listen and took the modular bay cue from Fujitsu's P series! :D

It'll be available in Japan starting May 26th, I need more money NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously, this is my DREAM notebook, I NEED IT! I FRICKIN NEED IT MANG!!!!
Should I import it? When will it come out here!? ARRRGHHH!!!!

Ok, I no longer care that this notebook does not have the latest SR platform, just the looks along have persuaded me to jump on it. Is it true that the pricing for the new TZ will be similar to the current comparable TX models? Is the release date still July?

Seems to be July in Europe, its coming out in Japan May 26th. I think we'll get it between those two times, I feel like maybe ordering from Dynamism?

The cheapest config in Japan with the Celeron M and 60 gig hard drive starts at $1300 roughly and when I specced it with a 1.2 ghz Core 2 Duo, 2 gigs of ram and 100 gig 1.8" drive and optical drive, it went up to about $2100.

Oh god, I can't stop drooling over it right now! :D
    Darn you Sony, DARN YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    WAAAHHHH!!!!!!

    Sorry for the double post.

Judging by the translated Japanese, this T seems to be pretty customizable, you can take out the optical drive to put in a 2.5" hard drive, but I know its highly unlikely, but I was wondering if you could maybe swap out the CPU later? I was thinking of perhaps buying the lowest end TZ and then upgrading it later on?

That is it, I am getting this notebook though, this is number one on my list! This kicks the snot out of the Asus U1F especially, sorry!

I could replace the optical drive with a roomy 2.5" hard drive to store all my ISOs and would never need the optical drive and I'd save even more battery life! I love you Sony, I need this notebook ASAP!!! PLEASE!!!!!!

the CPU might be soldered onto the mobo, so you might not be able to swap it out. if the price is $2100 based on what you spec'ed out, its inline with current similar TX configs. And yes, the power button IS on the tubular hinge. love that glow.

Question, big retailers are selling the TX, what are the chances of places like Best Buy, Circuitcity carrying the new TZ when it comes out? Maybe a month or so later? Anyone knows how they work?

I still care about the SR platform. Now that they managed to tuck a 10W CPU into the ultraportable, it won't be hard to go SR. :)

BTW, I think the TZ does come with 802.11n.

Found one very minor downside: One memory slot with no soldered on-board RAM. That means 1GB and 2GB are the available options.

SR just came out, and the TZ will not be on SR platform, the CPU will be SR compatible which is two different things. And it will not come with 802.11n either.

regarding the ram slot, why would it be a downside that its not soldered on board RAM? and what did you mean one slot? shouldn't there be 2 altogether?

I looked on the Sony Japan website and there will be of course different configs of the TZ, one of them did have N wireless actually.

I'm just really excited about the ability to swap out the optical drive to put a 2.5" drive. My question is, do you have to use Sony's proprietary drive or would any 2.5" hard drive work? Because they keep mentioning a 160 gig hard drive, so maybe you can only use their 2.5" 160 gig drive?

What about the standard 1.8" hard drive, is it easily upgradeable from the bottom like the Asus U1F or do you have to take apart the whole computer like the older Vaio T series?

God, I just need one right now, when is it coming in the U.S? I wish I could buy it from Japan for the cheapest config and upgrade the processor and everything else later.

The Engadget site says that can configured to run both a 2.5-inch 160GB disk and a 1.8-inch 32GB SSD simultaneously??
Someone explains me how this is possible??

so you're saying that there's only a total of 1 slot only which is already occupied? if you buy it with 1 gig of RAM now you will need to get a 1 stick of 2 gig RAM if you wish to upgrade to 2 gigs total later?

the 2.5 inch drive would occupie where the optical drive is sitting. you just swap out the optical and insert the hard drive in its place.

Knowing sony and their love for proprietary technology, it most will likely be their own hard drive and off the shelve drive, but its just a guess.

Pretty much word for word you just said. With a slimmer body, that's a minor sacrifice. Is that an issue in terms of performance?

The 2.5" 160 gig hard drive indeed seems to be proprietary, maybe there is a way to open it up and put in your own 2.5" drive? When its put in the laptop to replace the optical drive, it gives you an extra USB port on the outside of the drive for three in total.

yes, it is a minor sacrifice. its more an issue of expandability. one stick of a 2GB RAM is about twice as expensive than buying two sticks of 1GB RAM. But I guess it won't be an issue if you buy a TZ with 2GB right from the start.

Well, I find it improves air flow on my SZ with the extended battery.

The medium battery isn't bad. The biggest one really does make it stand up, but if you need 18 hours of battery life ;)

Let's get one thing straight, Sony doesn't make hard drives. They will buy it from hard drive manufacturers like Hitachi. I am more than certain that you will be able to buy other vendor's hard drives.

First of all, where are you guys getting the information that you can take out the optical drive?

I'm going to be in Beijing and HK for the summer so if the price isn't too unreasonable, I might pick one up if it's available there.

Then why was there someone complaining about 1 DIMM slot being available? A 2x1GB memory kit isn't that expensive if you can remove the RAM that is already inside. I'm quite impressed with this laptop.

I find it strange that the current TX has 2 memory slots allowing 2 x 1GB of RAM while the TZ only has 1 slot, but not a deal breaker.

Since the U.S. and Jap versions might be different its hard to say what the default might be for the U.S. version.

I went to the web site and tried to configure one and there's an option to allow the 32GB of SSD/Optical drive or SSD drive/4200 rpm hdd. So not sure if its swappable or its how you configured and its fixed.

I never said SONY makes hard drives, hell, even some of their laptops are made by ASUS. BUT they DO like proprietary technology and they might modify a regular hdd so you would have to buy from them and no one else, its not that far fetched.

Is it also so that you have to choose between a SSD 32 GB or a 1,8 inch HDD 60-100 GB and in both cases can choose between a optical drive or a 160 HDD? That is: That you can't have both a 1,8 HD and at the same time have a SSD 32 GB?

Nope. TX has 1GB soldered onto mobo, while another 1GB takes up the lone memory slot.

I also found out how slim this TZ really is. To put into perspective, the TZ is slimmer than the MacBook in terms of height-to-depth ratio. Really. Insanity at its best. Prove it if anyone wants to.

Yup. It appears to have 1x1.8" (covers your "main" drive - SSD or 4200rpm), and 1x2.5" or 1x DVD.

    But the 1.8" SSD + 2.5" 160 is a MUCH better combo.

OK. But then you will miss a DVD, unless it is swapable?

I think there MUST be a solution that includes an optical drive, hopefully integrated. At least one you can connect via USB (external).

I don't think is swapable. I was impressed by how the manage to put a 2'5 in such a small machine. After i realize that they put it in the place of the optical drive. Now makes sense.
Maybe if you choose the SSD plus the 2'5 HDD they will give you an external drive?

It doesn't look like its swappable, it looks like its fixed, but no one knows for sure. the 32SSD doesn't actually make programs run THAT much faster, however, it does allow the booting of the OS that much quicker. however since I use the DVD a lot, I will most likely get the 160 + optical. I don't shutdown the comp multiple times, just put it in standby. But for those of you that do not need the DVD, the SSD and regular HDD makes a great combo. Although the SSD will make it substantially more expensive. around $500+ more.

For me, I think that is the one, as I also use the DVD a lot. But I hope that starting from Stand By will be quick enough from the 100 HDD compared to the SSD.

After studying the Japanese Sony site, the optical drive and 2,5" HDD seem to be swapable, because there is a release button on the drive (right side of the machine, on the drive itself) that hopefully releases the whole drive, and not only pushes the dvd out - and there is a button on the front side that seems to just push only the dvd out, ejection as usual.

I really hope this is so, because of the flexibility. Or: There must be an external solution available, but I can't see that such an external drive is presented.

I doubt the drive will be hot swappable. The ejection mechanism along other required items to make a drive swappable (like an enclosure for the CD drive) would add weight and complexity to an already tiny chassis.

I suspect the TZ will be like the G in that you order it with or without a CD drive. The chassis is different for each model.

If you order with the 2.5" drive it will simply fit in the non-CD chassis and connect to the mobo where the CD drive would. If you want to change the hd you'll need to disasseble the computer to get to the drive.
