After an exhaustive search on this forum (and other relevant sites) I need to ask some help with finding drivers (Vista 64 bit) for my Sony VAIO VGN-SZ483N. I have the original Vista x86 drivers, but as expected most of them does not like to be installed on a Vista x64 O/S.

Is there a site that someone could recommend please, or has someone with an SZ4xx attempted this "upgrade" and is willing to share his/her experiences with me, please?

I have tested my gaming machine with x64 against x86 (both Vista) and could say with reasonable confidence that the x64 installation outperforms the x86 installation without a doubt. It would really be good to change the O/S to x64 from the OEM x86.

Hopefully someone could come to the rescue here. :)

    Many thanks, Rudi

    Hi,

I have managed to download the following drivers for the VGN-SZ483N:
    UPEK (fingerprint sensor)
    Wireless LAN
    Bluetooth
    Nvidia
    Memory Card Reader
    SFEP
    SPIC
    Intel Video

When I installed all of these, it appears as if Device Manager is satisfied that all hardware has been detected and drivers installed (no "unknown devices"). I guess that Vista provided the remainder of the component drivers (such as the sound card, chipset, modem etc)

I then proceeded to install the "SONY applications" as originally supplied by the manufacturer. I however still cannot see the following utilities (which I find useful to operate the machine):
    Wireless Switch setting utility
    Power Management
Detection of graphics switch (prompting a reboot when switching between stamina and speed modes)
    Fn key functionality

Is there a different set of utilities specifically for 64bit OS's that I could download and install, or can someone point out some instructions to me as to go about getting full functionality of the utilities please?

Machine performance has certainly improved (maybe because of less "bloatware" that accompanied the original factory OS) and I am happy with that (and thankful to dz2k for providing the link to the drivers), now the last step would be to get all the "nice2haves" back in working order.

    Please help me here.

    Thank you, Rudi

i actually didnt worry about this stuff too much because i was soo happy about being 64 bit and having 4gb memory w/ my sz3 model. Now i will pursue these things! my model: vgn-sz440e

    Wireless Switch setting utility:
    Power Management:
Detection of graphics switch (prompting a reboot when switching between stamina and speed modes):
    Fn key functionality:

Other things i would like to have working:
S1 (mute) and S2 button working again
    Vaio control center software

I was able to install my models 32-bit notebook utilities to get the wireless switch setting utility, detection of graphics switch, and Fn Key functionality, S1 / S2 button working. I also just installled vaio power management and vaio control center s/w. here is the order i did so:
    sony shared library 3.0.00.10180
    sony utility 7.0.00.11210
    Vaio power management 2.0.00.12190
setting utility series 2.0.00.11230 (aka notebook utilities)
video drivers(i installed drivers from intel site in stamina mode. shutdown pc. switch to speed. boot up pc and installed nvidia drivers. shutdown pc. restart)
    vaio control center 3.0.00.16210

    Hey dz2k,

Glad to hear you have "some" of the utilities working. I also installed my 32 bit versions of the Sony Apps, with some success.

I also extracted the .pac/.sny files from the recovery media, and managed to recover the WindDVD application and one or two other minor ones.

Some elements of the VAIO Control Centre is not working, but I guess this is the price we will pay. It is sad that Sony does not offer support and full-release drivers and apps for the 64 bit versions of Windows. Their products run so much better on 64 bit.

Keep us posted with any new developments.

    Greetings from South Africa, Rudi
