    Hi all,

I've been talking about the Z so much, my father now wants to order one! I found this deal via Amazon that seems pretty good to me:

    http://www.amazon.com/Sony-VGN-Z550...2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1220805377&sr=8-2

its for the VGN-Z550 with 3 gigs ram, 250 gb hdd, P8600 - which seems more than enough for my father - all for $1788 with free shipping and no tax. This seems like a great deal to me, and I just wanted to get your opinion before I jump on it.

Are there any downsides to ordering from Amazon? Does this deal seem good to you? My plan is to order it for him, ship it here - then clean install vista and add some apps for him, then ship it out to him.

    Thanks as always!

EDIT: Note that my father does want a warranty on it - and amazon has third parties that sell them, but I called up Sony and they said it would be no problem to purchase one directly for it.

How is Amazon's return policy with laptops?

If it is broken, do they accept returns?

Right now, its even cheaper than the lower end Z520 and Z530 models they are also selling!

People should take advantage of this while it lasts!

yes I think its a price mistake on their part - the lower end models like stated above are pricier lol - I would act FAST if I was looking into this not a bad deal :D :D

its no mistake, for some reason sony seems to be phasing out that particular model, i bought this one from amazon and it had a bunch of dead pixels, returned it back to them and bought the 570 instead

Why would sony phase out a model they just introduced?

Just because it had a bunch of dead pixels doesn't mean its being phased out unless you have some other info.

    Hey all,

Thanks for your comments. If Sony happens to be phasing this particular model out - I think its more likely that its a business decision as opposed to any particular model having more defects. Anyway, I went ahead and ordered one for my father yesterday and Amazon already had a tracking number for me this morning! I will let you know when it arrives if there are any issues with it.

    All the best!

Yes and no, it cost $66 bucks for me to ship it back to them fedex/insured/etc. They reimbursed me 11... I might give them a call to ask for some more since that doesn't seem right as they required it be sent insured and trackable.

=) Well, this one is actually for my father (every call I've placed to him in the last few weeks - somehow the Z came up? ...odd). Which means I'm just going to do a clean Vista install for him, add a OpenOffice and a few other goodies, and then hopefully ship it out to him by Friday - so no extended review here...

However! After seeing how fast Amazon shipped his out, I canceled my Z591 that I ordered Aug 15th and was still waiting for, and re-ordered it from Amazon. And they say they should ship it sometime today, scheduled for overnight delivery... Which means I MAY get to clean install both of them at the same time!

It's not that different from the z520 that Amazon has for $1715 or so... Slightly slower processor, identical otherwise.

btw, just received it... and after sending a couple emails to amazon customer service, they ended up honoring the price adjustment, so i did get it for $1,690! don't ask me how, since the price had already gone up to $1,900+ by the time i contacted them...
