VAIO VPC-Z1190 CTO on Canadian Site!

Yeah, I was also looking at it today. It's hard to judge from those pictures though. Did anyone buy cases from them before? Are they worth it?

 

The 192Gb is a 3x64Gb configuration. At least that's what I can see in the Intel RST Control Panel.

I was planning to create a separate thread about it, but figured I would first ask here:

Is anyone having issues with the sound through the noise cancelling earphones that come with the Z1190? It appears very high pitched and I barely hear any bass. I was actually wondering if there is any equalizer in Windows 7 where I could adjust the sound settings, but I couldn't find it. I know I can set it up in programs like WMP or iTunes, but what about YouTube videos or Skype? Anyone having similar observations?

I don't have a problem with bass, but I do find the sound a bit on the sharp side (too much treble). Funnily enough I was hunting around for an equalizer as well, but there doesn't appear to be one. I haven't tried it out with my expensive Sony full-cup earphone yet, I'll see if the treble issue continues there.

Also if the sound mysteriously cuts out completely after connecting or disconnecting the noise cancelling headphones: this appears to be a known issue. Someone mentioned that muting/unmuting brought the sound back.

 

Great post you did there! Both statements are correct then: 128+64 (counting physical boards) and 3x64 (counting logical disks). Btw, I wonder if Sony will ever offer a possibility of expanding storage (for those with room for extra disks).

That's pretty much what I was referring to. I had a conversation over Skype today and I had to reduce the volume a lot because the other person's voice sounded so sharp. I find it really strange that there is not even a simple equalizer embedded in Win7.

Hm, that never happened to me and I plugged and unplugged the earphones couple times already.

 

OK, it doesn't look like it's the system... or the noise cancelling portion... it seems to be more the earbuds in general. I tried out my old Sony MDR-V600 headphones on a movie and they sound perfect. The earbuds actually have more bass to them, but the V600's sound silky smooth in comparison. Also I remembered that someone said a while ago that you could use the notebook's microphone with non-noise cancelling headphones for a pseudo noise cancelling... and you can't.

I'm affraid about : heat and ssd degradation (and ssd are not standard and probably it will be very difficult and expansive to replace it later)

 

Order it, who cares about SSD degredation, from what I understand it will still be blazing fast vis-a-vis conventional HDD even after extensive use.

There is NO heat problem - yes the exhaust puts out heat but the rest of the notebook remains icy cool! Watched a 2 hours 1080p video with it on a table and afterwards the bottom felt MILDLY warm and nothing else was warm. Simply amazing - it's one of the reasons I love my SZ (never gets hot) and it's even better on the Z11.

I have the 512GB SSD. Blazing fast, and so far no one has been able to trigger noticeable performance issues even without trim. Basically it looks to be a non-issue.

I ordered a Premium Carbon 192 i7 3 days ago and its early may.
Maybe its been pushed up! I'll call them tomorrow for an eta!.

EDIT: NEvermind its the i7 that is causing the delay.

 

Damn really want a Z cto -- hope Sonystyle.ca has another sale or the price drops on some of the upgrades like the BD drive.

The shipping eta on the carbon/i7 is now May 11. If it were closer to like Apr 20 I may have just done it before. Damn I hate waiting...

 

I want to check the status of my order, buy it's not working, I entered my email of my sonystyle account (same where I received the email confirmation of my purchase) and the order number and seem to not find it.

 

The order tracking option has not been working for a long time on the canadian sony style site.

 

If you have to wait until May 11, you may as well wait for June 20th when the refresh of the Z comes out. Prices may have dropped slightly.

Yes, the 4GB option is 2x2GB. The US CTO models are 1x4GB tho. Once again, we Canadians get the shaft... no way to get 1080p screen, no signature collection model, only 2 color choices, base model starts at $1999, and 256gb is not quad raid like the asia and euro models....

 

yeah that unfair for us canadians in my opinion and our cto are being built in the states as well why cant they make some of the options available to us

also, on another thread they have found a ram this is compatible with the new vaio z but the website that sells them charges and arm and a leg for shipping can anyone recommend a site that has the ram available with affordable shipping to canada?

 

What RAM is compatible do you have a name brand or type maybe it can be found or ordered in Toronto.

 

apparently there have been 2 different types of ram that have been tested on the new vaio z and have been usable without any conflicts

My date got pushed back today from April 20th to April 27th due to the fact that Sony had some difficulty in obtaining 128 gb Ram, which is on back order from Samsung. He said hopefully by next week everything will take care of itself and everything will work out.

If my laptop gets delayed again and is in May, then I will cancel my current order and wait for the Sony Z's refresh coming up June 20th.

Does anyone know what the exchange time is for a notebook with Sony Z is if you buy it over the phone? Info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

as for the refresh apparently isnt the refresh going to be pushed futher into the fall since the vaio z was introduced in march a little late into the year?

 

I toke 192 gig SSD too and my laptop is in preparation now... I read here the ssd should be 3x64 gig, but on the sonystyle style and in the email confirmation order, it told 1x128 and 1x64, but it's false ? Raid cannot work with different size, why Sony give bad info ? arg... I hate that.

They appear to be shipped out in skids up to Canada, where FedEx breaks them down and ships to the final destination. In the case of my unit, I entered production on a Friday and received the shipping notice the following Wednesday - however it actually shipped out on Tuesday. I received it on Thursday. So, essentially 7 total days between production and reception.

I took core i5 cpu because I wanted it fast.

I checked on Fedex and my laptop in presently in Manitoba, the estimated date for delivery is tomorrow !

 

Hmm, you might want to give Sony a call. I ordered mine on Mar 17th and received the "production started" email on Mar 19th. I received the laptop on Mar 25th so your waiting time seems far too long. What was your original estimated shipping date?

 

My ship date is april 20
I ordered the premium carbon and i7 maybe thats why

 

I know that for some reason that combination always pushes the shipping date quite far. I ordered the premium carbon as well but with an i5, so I got mine earlier. Apparently same thing happens if you order i7 and standard silver. It's just if you choose them both together the shipment is delayed. Go figure :/

 

I went to Canada Computers today and asked about ordering this type of RAM in single or bulk for all of us. He basically stated he can't get it. The Hynix has never been sold to public stores only direct purchase from a manufacturer. The Super Talent he just could not find it at all in his system from his major distributor.

So perhaps someone can take the initiative and email Hynix directly and see if we can bulk order from them 10-20 pieces and then settle up. Or just wait until something comes out that will be compatible.

I received an email today stating that production on my Z has begun.

How much time since this email to when it actually gets shipped. I have a ship date of April 27th but hoping it gets here sooner than that.

Yes mine was an i7 as well with the Premium Carbon option and a 384GB SSD. I'm hoping it comes sooner than the specified ship date as this has really been a snails pace experience. Obviously, Sony underestimated the demand for the Sony Z.

If you go on Sonystyle.ca and hit the Z1190 CTO they don't even offer the i7 CPU anymore its only the i5!! The i7 chips must be really hard to get to the point its slowing down manufacturing....glad I ordered mine when I did with the i7.

I did notice they dropped the price of the SSD's considerably, especially the 512GB SSD.

 

With the new Macbook Pros just announced, I think sales of the Z are only going to get stronger (seriously, the new MBP 13" is a joke in comparison).

 

I just was saying the same thing to myself Sunfox, I just noticed the specs they only increased the CPU clock speed on the 13 inch Mac Book Pro's from 2.26GHz to 2.4GHz talk about disappointment. That's barely noticeable the only good thing is it got a better graphics card and longer battery life but you would think they would have gone more all out on a new product.

 

I too have recieved the production start email yesterday and my estimated ship date is still april 20 as stated in the email...but i have a feeling all you guys who had later ship dates might get it during the next shipment which would be on april 20 ...since sunfox mentioned they do tend to ship up to canada an entire skid of these new vaio z and then are broken up to be shipped

 

I went to MEC (Mountain Equipment Co-op) store located on King St. West just east of Spadina Ave. They have some laptop cases and sleeves for 13 inch laptops that were well priced and pretty good.

The one black laptop bag was $26 and had handles and really nice light beige suede inside to protect the laptop from scratches. It had thick padding at the bottom just in case you put your case on the floor or if there is a slight drop it would protect your laptop very well. As well, what I found really great was the strap that came with this bag has on one side of it a rubberized texture so it doesn't slip off your shoulder like a nylon strap. For $26 bucks I think its a great deal and product.

They had a black neoprene sleeve as well for $18 bucks I took a picture of that as well. And finally compact gray/black sling type notebook backpack, I forgot the price on that one.

Just in case anyone was still looking for a case this would be a good place to look.

By the way I ordered a 13.1 inch microfiber cloth to protect the keyboard from scratching the screen. It was tough to find one at the right size and with cheap shipping to Canada which was only $4 for shipping and $14.95 for the microfiber. I think this is a cheap price to pay for prevention of scratching the screen.

recieved an unexpected email today ..i finally got my order shipped email ahead of my estimated ship date of april 20....so i guess some of you guys will get yours as well ...so just to confirm it has been shipped as of april 15 about 5 days ahead of schedule ...

updated: went to check the tracking number and apparently it was shippped on april 14 and is expected to arrive tomorrow on april 16 at 12 noon even better

 

Same here, I received an email that stated my order has been shipped, I just got it today.

I'm guessing I will receive it by tomorrow.
