I installed Windows 8 and discovered that the default Microsoft drivers doesn't work with the VPCS111FM's auto-dim feature; that is, the screen is at the lowest brightness level.
The only partial solution for this is to disable the video driver -- but then I lose the screen resolution.
I checked out the thread on how to clean install on a VAIO S, but it does not seem to work on Windows 8:
- Installing the Sony provided video drivers don't solve the problem.
- I installed Sony Control Center, but the auto-dim setting isn't available under "Display"
Is there a possible solution?

I have had issues with upgrading my VPCS111FM laptop from Win7 Home Prem to Win7 Ultimate. The laptop screen was very dim and nothing would change things. The only workaround to the problem is to use an external monitor which will work great. Since I travel for work, I had to go back to Win 7 Home Prem. Sony was NOT at all helpful. I would probably have gotten a response from a BRICK than a rep from Sony.
Lesson learnt - NEVER buy a SONY machine in the future.
Hope that helps. -
Thanks to user12677 at superuser.com, I can confirm his solution.
Sony VAIO dim screen on Windows 8 - Super User
I've been very disappointed with Sony maintenance and driver updates. It indicates the wheels are falling off their wagon. Stay away. -
Haha, user12677 is actually me

BSalita: Actually, the solution I provided isn't exactly perfect. I don't know if you've experienced this, but the video driver is actually quite buggy (my display would crash maybe every couple of hours -- it's not a big issue, but it's something I would like to fix).
Just wondering if you have the same problem? If you do, there is an alternative solution posted at:

Perhaps it would be good to investigate this solution as well ...
