I have a new Sony VAIO FW490J that I just did a clean install of Windows 7 Professional on. I also updated all the major drivers from the Sony eSupport site.

For whatever reason, the VAIO won't play a Blu-Ray disc. I can explore it just not play it.

I think my problem likes with the WinDVD BD for VAIO software. I tried to install the software but the program is nowhere to be found after what appears to be a successful installation.

Am I missing something here? Is there another program needed?

    Am I missing something here?

You say you can explore and not play and then you say the program is nowhere to be found?

Is it in your start menu and does it load?
If you can launch WinDVD and it can see the disc is in the drive but doesn't play it then I would check the version of the VGA driver. I had a similar issue on my AW.

If you're installing WinDVD BD from the self-made recovery DVDs under Windows 7, I wouldn't be surprised if it was unsuccessful.

I've been attempting to do exactly that since May onto the Windows 7 R.C. I've tried all sorts of modifications each time, from turning off UAC to fiddling with the adminstrator settings. I've always suspected Sony's middleware installer program of getting in the way. The process of repeatedly shuffling all three DVDs didn't help either.

In the end, a blog link mentioned elsewhere in this Sony forum explained the process of using a program called Mod2Wim in conjunction with the hidden partition where the recovery files originally resided

The process of distilling the WinDVD files allowed me to finally get the program installed into Windows 7 RC. When I install the full commercial version of Win7, I'd expect the process to go just as smoothly.

Prior to installing WinDVD, my Blu-ray drive would also only display a Blu-ray disc's file structure (folders & filenames) but not do playback.

Now Blu-ray playback works just as well as when it was installed under Vista 64.

Hello, I'm having the same problem. I did a clean install of Windows 7. Everything work fine except for playing a Blu-ray disk. I have reinstalled several times. WinDVD software is not there. Not in Add/Remove no folders nothing. I tried to install in safe mode. I even worked with tech support but they had me try everything I already tried.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

The software on esupport.sony.com appears to be just a patch.

I reinstalled windvd bd from a link here that someone provided (rapidshare).

You're right, the upgrade on Sony's site is only a patch.

There's a link to WinDVD BD in my Aw drivers thread.

We couldn't play back blu-rays after upgrading to Windows 7 on our Vaio, though we could still browse the disk. WinDVD BD just said "STOP" in the top left-hand corner of its screen whenever we asked it to play a blu-ray.

It looks like the Sony Windows 7 update disk installed an old version of the NVIDIA graphics driver - as soon as we updated the driver via the Sony site playback was fine again.

There is a new WinDVD update that now fixes this issue. Dated 12-02-09 version 8.0.20.79. It's under the fw490/WinDVD Software on Sony's support site.

The update says the software resolves issue where the WinDVD BD software is missing after performing the Microsoft Windows 7 upgrade.

    Worked for me... :D

The WinDVD Pro 2010? I installed the trial version and its not recognizing my blu-ray disc.

Edit: Downloaded ArcSoft TotalMedia Theatre 3 and played my blu-ray movies without any problems. Well, almost no problems. Any BD movie with Dolby will have no sound with the trial version but they did say once I buy it then I should be able to hear the sound from the BD. Sure enough, played a movie with just DTS and was able to hear everything. Looks like I'll be buying the ArcSoft for sure. =)
