I have read the entire thread and I could not find the consensus on this particular Sony Vaio model: VAIO Z VPCZ1

Best Buy has this for $1700 and I am considering buying one from their website. Are there any deal-breaker issues and what is wrong with the SSD's? Are they Gen 2 or Gen 1?

Or, should I stay away from this model and order a Z directly from Sony?

    Thanks

Ok, just tell me how the 1600x900 screen compares to the screen of the macbook pro? Is the screen on the Z glossy or matte? How does it compare to the screen of the HP Envy?

Best buys has it for 1739 I believe, but all out of stock and no definite answer as to when they'll be back in stock.

I picked mine up at frys and took a full pop at 1899.99

I had a macbook pro before and I think the screen on the Z is MUCH Nicer (Despite the light bleed :D ) The difference in resolution is HUGE. One thing I do miss though is the nice touch pad of the MAC, big improvement over the Sony for sure.

I wonder if Sony went with a glass-to-edge screen would that have alleviated the light leakage. However, if they did go with that the laptop would be heavier.

Is the screen matte or glossy? So, when you say MUCH Nicer you mean it has more pop?

In Uk, Sony z is matte. I own a Hp envy 15, look at my signature I returned it. Hp envy quality is some how bad. Poor heat management, black screen not solve yet, purplish webcam and so on. Look at Hp forum you can find tonz of complain. Hp is still bang of the buck because it is cheaper than Z and higher spec but quality wize poor.
Hp envy screen and Z series for full HD i think it's the same for me :) Go look at your nearest store to compare because everyone got different eye.

    Its matte.

Pop wise about the same as the Mac, however for asthetics I've always loved the glossy glass look.

Resolution wise its night and day, the text is sooo fine and sharp and the movies... wow lots better. Then again it is expected going from 1200 some pixel to 1600 pixel in a smaller screen too- big improvement!

The light leakage is rather small, and deemed "normal' for all LCD's not just the Z so I'm not reallly bothered by it.

The colors are much richer than my MBP 2.4 ghz 8600M. Wish i could find out how they can be calibrated. I could actually use less color in gaming mode.

if you live in the states you can always request a price match from a local Sony Style store if you have one in your area from the bestbuy price.

I don't know if they will price match and out of stock item. Just so you know the one at Best Buy is the same one you can get at SonyStyle for $1899. Also, if you ise bing.com rewards when ordering you can get an additional 5% off of your order. So if you want to wait until Best Buy gets more it might even be cheaper.

Thanks for the suggestions. The problem with Bestbuy and Microcenter is that both add sales tax of about $150 for Texas where I am headed. This makes the Amazon price of $1829 cheapest for me!

Wait for TigerDirect to have that model back in stock & also hope that when you're ready to buy it, Bing Cashback will be 15%. That will bring the price down to about $1,615 shipped. :D

Note that TigerDirect charges sales taxes for shipping to Florida, North Carolina, and Illinois. :( Good luck. :)

I'd be surprised TigerDirect didn't charge sales tax to texas since they operate a couple CompUSA stores there.
