    HI,

I have just been given a VAIO PCG8A2M (GRX316MP) , i was told "it's broken but if you can fix it yo can have it" so having a quick look at it there's no sign of life on the display but the lights come on and i can here the HDD heads moving about.

Looking a little more i found that all the ram is missing , so now im not sure if its worth buying some ram to see if it works or not ? The lack of ram would prob explain the lack of display but i wonder if i should be getting POST beeps at least, which im not.

So my question is if a VAIO had no ram should (if all else was working) it be getting POST beeps ?

    Thx all,
    Jackdinn.

No, nothing will happen without RAM. It is correctly a GRX316P, a Pentium 4 "Power Laptop" in Sony's marketing. The memory is 200 pin PC2100 DDR SoDimm - which is quite obsolete. It will cost around $50 a gigabyte.

Ahh , a response :D many thx MelodyMaster.

Iv been asking this question quite a lot to different people and some are saying yes of course you should be getting post beeps as thats what there for (to say if the ram is correctly installed/faulty, amongst other things) and others are saying no, without any ram installed you would get no sigh of life from the monitor, the GPU & CPU fans might spin for a sec & then stop & you would also not get any POST beeps at all.

Looks like i'll prob just buy 256MB (hopefully This will be ok) and hope for the best.

Does leave me wondering just how much my local PC sales/repair shop knows as they were one of the ones who were adamant I would get the POST beeps without ram, o well lucky i dont have to use them to fix my comps.

    Thx v much,
    JackDinn.
