I just picked up this monster today, and I am very pleased. It is so nice looking I had three people stop and talk about it one hour after I got it while sitting in a book store testing it out. Not to mention that it is a beast. I doubled the ram that came with it and man it rocks. If anyone else has picked this up post a reply and tell me what you think.

    Laters,

I have a A170 and am very pleased with it as well. I put in 1GB of RAM for $116 each at crucial.com. I'm writing a lot on it, and it took me a while to get used to the keyboard, but I don't have problems with it anymore. I really like the high resolution, I don't even change the dpi/font settings since my old computer's resolution was 1600x1200 and I'm used to small fonts. I really like being able to have two browser windows side by side, or a Word document with 2 pages at 100%. The thing I like best is the screen. Pictures look so vivid compared to other flat panel displays, it's a major quality step in my opinion. I don't like the automatic brightness feature though, it's too dark for me, even if I change the default settings. I have it one step below maximum most of the time. And to be picky, I don't like that the fan is running constantly. I thought with a Centrino processor I would get a completely quiet computer. A friend of mine has a Dell Latitude D600. The fan on that computer doesn't turn on under normal use at all.

I am considering to install a better hard drive though. I have a 60GB, 7200rpm Hitachi 7K60 (they sell those for $197 at zipzoomfly.com now) I still haven't figured out how to open the laptop. Removing all the screws at the bottom didn't do the trick. Any advice from people who were more successful would be highly appreciated.

Enjoy your new notebook, it's the best I ever had, and it is my fifth laptop.

Is there a way to turn off the auto brightness sensor?

    --------------------
    Compaq Presario 2800T
    Pentium 4-M 1.6 GHz - 15" UXGA
    512 MB RAM - 40 GB (5400 rpm)
ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 64 MB
Pretty good for 2002 isn't it?

    Eliwood,

You can adjust the default settings of the automatic brightness feature in the Control Panel/Sony Notebook Setup/Automatic Brightness or just use the special button close to the screen. It saves the setting you select even after restarting the computer.
