Sorry if this has been posted before, but I have a VGN-FW290 with Green Lines and red blocks during startup and a green screen after it boots. I imagine the video chip has overheated and fried or came unsoldered. Any information on whether the mainboard can be fixed. or purchasefor less than and arm and a leg? I would rather get a new laptop instead of a new board.

    Thanks

Even though SONY is very good brand, that particular model is KNOWN to be overheating... You can always try to change it's components, can u tell us which of the components are fried? You can do this by opening up the laptop. video card, and ram, hdd are no problem to change, if it is MOBO, there is just no way you can fix it.

BTW, symptoms you are facing may be have to do with display, display card, or it's connector, hidden inside the lid. try connecting it to external display. You can always search for your video card. It should be available, it has been a while since it is very old one.
