Hi i noticed my computer only has a maximum of 287 GB while it is advertised as 320 GB. Is this because something is taking up the rest of the space(ie: OS)? But even so would it really take that much space and shouldn't the hard drive in Local disk (C :) properties still say it's out of 320 GB?

ya, the operating system takes up space on the HDD to function and such.

it annoys me too, hdd manufacturers should compensate that space lost

Also 10 GB is the hidden recovery partition.

Part of the HD is used for hidden recovery partition.

Also, Windows and your hard drive manufacturer define 1 GB differently. With Windows, 1GB=2^30 while with your HD manufacturer, 1GB=10^9. Here's an example of how a 500GB HD capacity is counted as 465 GB by Windows or 465*2^30 equals approx 500,000,000,000

All HDDs appear in Windows lower in size (despite there being a hidden recovery partition or not) compared to their manufacturer reported size - see hendra's response :)
