I have this laptop, and I've seen plenty of other users overclocking their Sonys with 8400GT, but with mine, no matter what drivers I use or what program, overclocks revert back to stock 450/600 everytime I apply them.

Any ideas on why, or how to get around this?

Do they stay on stock clocks when you play a game? Some drivers don't fully support powermizer but keep clocks at stock values outside of fullscreen 3d apps.
I've listed the drivers i've tested in The 8400m GT Thread if you want to try them.

Yeah, they stay on stock clocks even when gaming.....have tried several different drivers, which other 8400gt sony uses overclock with fine, and ntune and rivtatuner....just no dice. :(

It *should* work, i don't think it's sony that locked the clocks:\ Are you using driversweeper to uninstall the old drivers in safe mode? Old registry entries could be the cause.
Try ATI tool aswell as some find it works better than rivatuner and *definatly* ntune ;)

For some reason, 169.04 actually works fine - but I still don't understand why I can't OC with any of the 17x drivers when everyone else can!

Strange alright, could be the modded inf you used. Did you use the same one for all the drivers you tested?
In my experience these problems usually sort themself out (for me at least :D) but the 174\5 are very good, a bit of messing around with drivers, inf's and google couldn't hurt ;)

Gotta try these new drivers. 174.74 has been doing me good! Actually playing Age of Conan at 1440x900, albeit most settings on low.

They should offer more powerful graphics cards in the NR series. How about a 9600GT?
