So I did a clean install of vista does any one know what drivers i need installed to get the Function Buttons to work again?
-
See my thread here:
http://forums.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=103875
You need the VAIO Event series for just the FN buttons. -
I don't know if that will work for the S460, as i hacked open the nvidia drivers listed and although although it has the keys for the 6200/6400, it does not seem to work, i had to modify the driver to get it to install, and has no smartdimmer control. Everything else however, works perfectly : ). So i can post the nvidia ini, and if someone wants to fix it i would be very pleased, as i tried all night (went to bed at 5:40 am) and was no closer.
-
So I Spent, the last few hr working the ini file to see if i can get it to respond, and well nothing. I have tried every reasonable setting i know and nothing, Looks like we have to wait for sony. So basically, when hell freezes over : (. Basically computer has offically been banished to the world of linux, unless someone has some really great insight about modifying nvidia ini, looks like things are stuck
-
I was stuck on this fn problem for ages and had read the the threads that you need vaio event services..it didn't work for me.....But what DID WORK was I installed all the vista drivers possible (in no particular order..because the amount of installing and uninstalling I did to get the fn keys working I finally gave up following the Sony 'guide')...then I did a Microsoft windows update...this downloaded 2 updates specifically for the Sony..I remember one being Sony IO Programming or something. Rebooted and everything was working.....
Try it ..It worked for me. -
could you be a little more specific, what drivers did you install for your video? what version of/which, sony software did you install
-
-
I'm in the same boat as the rest of you guys with my S4XP.
I've checked loads of forums and I've come to the conclusion that nobody has managed to get the Fn+F5/F6 brightness keys working on the S4 series - I've tried everything including drivers from laptopvideo2go.com and official sony drivers, but no luck
I've got everything else working (volume controls, memory stick reader etc) but no brightness controls!
The only sign of hope is that if you go to the sony site & list the drivers for your model, you can filter them by OS and choose Vista. Right now I've got 'VAIO Update 3' listed, and today its got some sonicstage crap added to the list. I'm hoping that they'll add more stuff in the future (i.e. video drivers!) instead of just the generic stuff. Theres a bit on the site that says the Vista drivers will be ready by the end of march - hope they don't forget to make drivers for our laptops -
I believe is software complexity as much as the next CS junkie, but one thing is true about computers, if its doable, its replicatable. So if we have a S460 that can control brightness, then there must be a way we can all do.
any ideas? I am not ready to just wait for sony. -
Add me to the list of Vista drivers for the S series.
-
Has anyone tried installing the drivers for the SZ on the S?
-
yup, no go : ( well for brightness, everything else works
-
just in case anyone cares, i tried pistonrippers solution, and well got nothing, maybe its just me, as i am running the bios of the s660/560, but i don't think so, since those units are actually supported
-
Guess I'm lucky that I chose to dual-boot, huh?
Funny you should mention your BIOS - I've also flashed my S4 BIOS with the S5 version (to fix the noisy fan)...the latest S4 BIOS is dated '05 and doesnt do anything for the fan.
On this post http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?s=&showtopic=12185&view=findpost&p=44600
the guy managed to get brightness controls working on his s460, using v97.46. Don't know if he's 'updated' his BIOS though.
For the 'offical' "Vista-ready" vaios, the sony update site has a note that says "*You must first update the BIOS before installing this video driver". Maybe if we downgraded back to the normal S4 BIOS, the brightness controls might work in Vista? Before you try this, remember that the BIOS flashing program was made to run under XP - could probably brick your laptop if run under Vista! -
not likely, seeing as gave it a good bit of effort before i flashed : (. sorry. But(for me) there is no doubt that it is an Nvidia related issue, not a sony one. as it works for newer revision of the 6200 found in the S9/8 (japan) so maybe a video bios flash may fix it.
-
BlinKSilver did you get the the FN+F3/F4 keys for volume to work? What drivers did you install?
-
Just browsed over the Sony USA Support homepage and for the S660 there seem to be a large amount of Vista drivers! This model is basically the same as the S5-Series so these should maybe work.
http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-list.pl?mdl=VGNS660&UpdateType=Everything&SelectOS=27 -
thats what i did : ). Basically i took everything i could from the s660 and the Sz, it worked well. but if you don not have a specific 6400/6200 you are S-O-L, the s460, completely S-O-L : (. but yeah i do have the fn keys working, even the brightness ones, they just don't change the brightness.
oh and Bomfunk, i thnk your computer is fully support, i don't even know what you are doing here : ). But i may just be wrong. -
Its supposed to be fully supported but drivers haven't been released for the S5 series either unfortunately. I installed vista yesterday and didn't get the Fn Keys to work at all as of yet although I installed in the Sony proposed order. Any specific order you installed the sony stuff?
I guess I'll just have to uninstall and try again. -
looks like it going to be up to me to get a guide up and running for the S38/S4/S5 that we can keep updated : ). I can't promise that i will get to it, but, i will do my best too. I mean, we can't let the sz users have all the vista loving, now can we?
-
A couple months ago when i had an S660 to play with, i had installed Vista RTM and it ran fine (actually fewer issues than with my SZ.) I think all the hardware drivers except for the FN keys were working without any problems. I installed Nvidia drivers and they worked awesome. For a temporary workaround there are settings in the Nvidia panel to control the brightness. I don't see why an S460 would not be the same. At one point i did run Vista pre-RTM on my older S460 and it ran fine also. Even tried Readyboost in the memory stick slot and it also worked fine. Although an S660 BIOS cannot be used in a S460 the FN keys driver should be the same for both machines, and i think i saw a complete set of drivers for Vista/S660? On the S660 Vista RTM ran beautifully.
Let us know how it goes. -
Ok got the FN buttons to work for volume. It was definitely the order of install that was crucial here.
1. Sony Utilities DLL Update (Reboot)
2. Sony Shared Library update
3. Sony event Services Update
Now its just brightness that's left. -
Bomfunk did you get the brightness figured out? did you use the 660 drivers? which ones?
-
Just tried those drivers above (the new S660 ones) but they didn't fix the brightness controls for me
I extracted the driver (using that model.txt trick), uninstalled the old drivers first, rebooted, installed the new drivers using the .inf method (setup.exe doesnt recognise the card) and rebooted afterwards.
Hope this wasn't an April Fools joke
surefire, just out of curiosity, which one of the S series do you have? If its an S4xx, did you 'update' your bios to the S5 version (for the fan noise fix)? -
VGN-s460 FN BRIGHTNESS & VOLUME WORKS
Download the VGN-s660 vista updates from Sony's site and install according to Bomfunk's installation order:
-Alps Pointing Device Driver Update (7.0.501.5) ** optional
-Sony Battery Check Utility Update (2.0.00.11110) ** optional
-Sony Shared Library Update (3.0.00.10180)
-Sony Utilities Series Update (2.0.00.11230)
-Sony Utilities DLL Update (7.0.00.11210)
-Sony Video Shared Library Update (3.1.02.01170)
-VAIO Event Services Update (3.0.00.13110)
Do a search on Google for an nVidia geForce go 98.12 vista driver update and install it! The file I downloaded was called "nvidia_geforcego_98.12-vista32.exe"
This fixed both the FN volume and brightness problem for my vgn-s460. Hopefully this helps...GOOD LUCK!

I have an S480P and I tried all of the above suggestions, including the newer nVidia drivers 98.12 and 98.13.
When I press FN+F5 or FN+F6, the Brightness popup shows, but it does NOT actually change the brightness of the display.
I don't know if MDJ07 has the brightness "really" working, but perhaps the S460 is slightly different.
Bottom line, my Fn+F5/F6 brightness control does not actually change the brightness at this point. -
-
to get the fn keys working, go to the sony driver updates section, and download "vaio event service". once installed the fn keys will be up and running, brightness, volume etc. Good luck!
fattail95 -
I have the latest Vaio Event Service installed. And as I've already stated, the Fn key mostly works. I can change volume, mute, etc. It's just the brightness that does not seem to work. I've tried installing all of the mentioned Sony downloads, in the recommended order, no luck. I've tried installing generic nVidia drivers, no luck. I've tried Sony's Vista nVidia drivers (with the model.txt fix), no luck, the installs never complete. The only thing different is that mine is the S480P. I agree that the brightness issue is with the video driver, it just doesn't seem to react to the Fn key.
-
surefire, did you have to further modify the 98.13 inf to get it to work with the new 101.70?
Still no luck here. No brightness control. -
I just installed these drivers 98.12 http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=13327
And everything is fully working.
My computer is a S460P it take quite some time to install but it's fully working -

Use modded sony 9813.inf i just uploaded belowClick to expand...
There seems to be an error with the nv_disp you uploaded?
Uninstalled all nVidia drivers. I used the 98.13 inf, and installed the 101.70 drivers just fine. I'm running on it right now.
Unfortunately, no luck with brightness control.
The ironic thing is, if I go in to nVidia Control Panel > Adjust desktop color settings, I can move the Brightness slider to change the brightness just fine.
But Fn+F5/F6 does not work for brightness control. And Windows Mobility Center does not show a brightness control. The Fn+* works for all other functions like volume and mute.
I'm going to give up on this. I guess the S480P is different. -
surefire,
I tried it all over again, uninstalling all nVidia drivers and starting from scratch with the 101.70 drivers. Still nothing.
I think it's time for me to just live with the full brightness.
Thanks for your help! -
One question?
Have u been using sony 9813 inf or the one from LV2Go.com
If u've been using LV2Go.com ver then THAT'S the problem
U need to use the original sony 9813 inf with any new nvidia driver
meaning u have to modify the new inf to model that of the sony 9813 inf
There is still hope -
surefire
I tried it again with your inf. Using the setup.exe did not work, so I had to use the "have disk" method. It installed fine.
But still no luck, the FN+F5/F6 does not change the brightness.
The FN+* for everything else still works, and S1/S2 buttons work just fine.
BTW, I'm still on the standard BIOS for the S480P, if that matters. (Phoenix R0092V0) -
Could you check the version.txt. is this the same with me.

I recently updated my VGN-F370 to Vista. Initially I was havibng problems with the FN keys . I followed your recommendations and got them to work . I am still having problems with the display control F7( to use a projector with Power Point ) . any suggestions?? Thank you
-
Hey guys,
Just to say I've finally got the brightness controls working!!
surefire - I followed all your instructions but no luck. I uninstalled my current drivers, rebooted, installed the v101.70 drivers using the v98.13 .inf file and it didnt work. I checked all my version.txt files and they were the same as yours (except my VAIO Event service was slightly newer).
What did work was following JaY-B's post - for some reason the v98.12 drivers at laptopvideo2go.com have brightness control!!
ROCUV - if you're having difficulty with the Fn+F7 function, try using the manual method - go to Display settigs (right-click desktop > personalise > Display Settings), click on the image of the secondary monitor (ie the projector) and tick the "extend the desktop onto this monitor" box. This, however, will make the projector show a different image from your laptop screen (ie an extension of your desktop) - Just open your powerpoint in a non-maximised window, and drag it over the right edge of your laptop screen and it'll appear on the projector, then press F5 to start the presentation. Unfortunately I have no idea how to get it to work in clone mode using the windows method. My Fn+F7 keys are working fine in vista.
Just for reference, my laptop is the VAIO S4XP, using the s5 bios to fix the fan noise. -
Good news. I got it to work with the 98.12 driver. But the key was to NOT use the modded inf. In the past, I always used the modded inf, so the brightness was not working. Using the default inf did the trick. Thanks for all of your help.

I started to run the upgrade process and I get a dialog box that says, "your model is vgn-s570 and is not qualified for vista express upgrade." Did anyone else get this?
