I already posted the model check bypass trick on this tread

    Basically you
    Go to C:\Windows
Edit or Create Model.txt & type Model = "VGN-XXXX" Save
XXXX = the model the driver was designed to work with
RightClick Model.txt > Properties > Go to 'Security' Tab >
Click 'Edit' > Check 'Deny' for only 'Write' under 'Permissions for SYSTEM' pane
Do this for all Group or user names

I finished installing Vista and all the drivers in the order that surefire gave. However, my function buttons (all, not just brightness) and S1 and S2 doesn't work.

The FN buttons for the Volume keys should work, haven't got the brightness adjustment working to date. have you installed all the software off Sony's website?

I did install all the software and drivers. However, after installing some of them, windows gave me a message saying "The software may not have installed correctly" and game me the option to click "Reinstall with rcommended settings" or I can click "The software installed correctly." I will try to take some screens later tonight.

I got the Fn keys work for all the volume, brightness, and mute with my S560.
But on my first try, none of them work despite following the recommended sequence.
I think I reinstalled/overwrite the DLL utility and vaio event service and the fn key works afterwards.

    Update: Everything works!

I reinstalled Vaio Event Service, restarted the computer, and got the function keys to work (except the brightness). I then googled nvidia 98.12 and downloaded, installed, and restarted the computer and now the brightness control works.

i am bent on the fact that you dont need forceware 9812 for brightness control to work!

xprohx do me a favor and go to 'C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository' and look for nvsz or nv_sz or nv4_disp or any folder that depicts the driver 98.12 you just installed. in it you will find a copy of the inf.

now if you can kindly post the inf file. i would like to examine it

i just dont get why bomfunk's system ceases to not be the odd

Surefire: thanks for your driver placement order list. worked Great way better then the sony list for my S460. I am having an issue though. I cant find drivers for my video card. if anyone can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it. I went to NVIDIA's site and it truely sucks for finding anything helpful. it lists my video card in the list but then it comes up saying no compatible hardware or vista not installed. I was wondering also if the realtek and touch pad drivers are the same for the 460 560 and 660 machines? if so how do i install the 660 drivers on my 460 without getting the not correct model message. then ill be home free. Again thanks for your help

    Go to C:\Windows
RightClick Model.txt > Properties > Go to 'Security' Tab >
Click 'Edit' > Check 'Allow' for only 'Full control' in 'Permissions for SYSTEM' pane
Do this for only 'Users (MY-PC\Users)' in 'Group or user names' pane

    Go to C:\Windows
    Edit Model.txt & type Model = "VGN-XXXX" Save
XXXX = the model the driver was designed to work with
RightClick Model.txt > Properties > Go to 'Security' Tab >

Hey guys, thank you very much for the information about how to get my Sony VGN-S460 (Vista) to use its FN buttons... as I've been living without them for quite a while now. Thanks for the NVIDIA version that enables brightness too!

I know I'm a bit behind the curve, but thank you so much for your work on this. It has definately extended the life of my much abused VGN-S460.

    Thanks again,

    Nick

I have a VGN-TXN17P and installed Vista Professional. Of course, it wasn't until after this that I found out my "Windows Vista Capable" Vaio required Vista Business. However, I was fortunate enough to run across this thread and the work arounds for the VGN-S Series worked 100% for me. (Well, 95% as I am still unable to get my memory stick reader to work).

Thanks for all the help. Pure geniuses.

    Hey guys,

So first of all, I have an S360. As some of you know, this is the S series with the Radeon 9700. Utilizing DH Mobility Modder ( http://www.driverheaven.net/modtool/), I've installed the latest ATI drivers for the laptop, and they work splendidly in 3D applications.

I also have sound working, so essentially the only barrier left is *all* the function keys.

Some of you have mentioned being able to get the volume keys and such working, and some of you have even gotten your brightness settings to work. Unfortunately, my Fn keys don't work at all. I've tried drivers from the SZ series (utilizing the model lock workaround), etc, but nothing really seems to work. Additionally, my S1 and S2 keys don't work either.

I get the feeling that the Shared Library and such, while installed, aren't actually functioning or running.

So anybody had any success with the S360 or other S3s?

    Thanks.

ba79aung and Supratik I got mine to work from following the directions from surefire. I ended up doing it a few times befor getting it right.

I now have a VGN-SZ650N/C, Bestbuy screwed up my laptop. it was ridiculous here is what happened: (they kept telling me it was a driver issue)

    Computer: Sony VGN-S460
    Issue: CD/DVD Rom drive

I was informed that tech support could not install software on my laptop including restoring the OS or installing drivers. When I got my laptop back there were driver zip packets on my desktop and someone installed remote desktop the icon was hidden in my documents.

    Sent--First time
    • Screen had dead Pixels
    • DVD Drive wont burn movies will reads CDs and DVDs fine

    Return
    • Screws missing
    • Wireless switch no longer works
    • DVD Drive no longer reads DVD at all only CDs will not burn

    Sent--Second time
    • DVD Drive no longer reads DVD at all only CDs will not burn
    • Wireless Switch will not turn off
    • Fan making noise

    Call from tech support
    • Claims to have fixed drive; I ask if he fixed my wireless switch and fan. He said no he will fix those then sent unit back.

    Return
    • DVD Drive opens a ¼ to ½ and inch will not open or close the rest of the way
    • Wireless switch not working
    • Fan still making noise

    Sent—Third time
    • DVD Drive won’t open or close
    • Wireless switch not working
    • Fan still making noise

    Call From tech support
    • Claims that drive is fixed and working correctly
    • Wireless switch has been fixed
    • Fan was replaced

    Return
    • DVD Drive will not read CDs or DVDs now at all.
    • DVD Drive has a lot of play in the Door (left and right and comes out farther then on another s460) it moves around a lot compared to drawer on another VGN-S460. It feels like it isn’t secured properly or is a very low quality part, not the same quality as the drive prior to me bringing it in for repair.
    • DVD ribbon cable gets caught on drawer when pushing drawer back in folds cable in half. It also creates resistance when ejecting drawer and pushing it back in.

    Hi all,

I just installed Vista Business on my VGN-S460 and I am having a couple of issues:

    - screen hangs every 1 or 2 seconds
    - FN key does not work

The first issue is much more important as it makes it difficult to work on every thing else so please share whatever advise you may have.

    Thank you

    Hi biohen,

The first problem sounds like the graphics driver to me.. Try getting an updated version.
For the second problem try the solutions posted in the thread..

    Cheers,

    Biohen,

it is the video drivers. unfortunately nvidia doesnt support upgrading drivers they produce one then that about that. there is a site listed on this forum maybe in this thread about another site where people have ripped the driver apart and made changes I had luck with that route. as for the function keys it is the order you install the drivers. sounds crazy but it works
