A quote from THIS review on the Sony S270, now I belive it's a very similar laptop to the Sony S5XP, if not exactly the same mould.

Now, does anyone know if you can do the same things to the S5XP and get that "little over 5 hours" that sounds ever so promosing, if not, how else can you get it to have a longer life?

u cant with s5x. If u want 5 hours, try extended battery
tweaking hardware and adjusting brightness to minimum (barely see) will get you around 3:45.
The battery life just gets lower.

what kind of battery life can we realistically expect with the bigger one? 5+ hours?

I get around 4:10 on highest brightness playing stuff off the hard drive constantly on my Sony FJ170, which has a 14.1 WXGA and integrated graphics. With medium brightness, I'm sure you could get into the 5 hour mark with tweaking and whatnot on the FS5xx series.

From my knowledge, S3xp and below are all 'dothan' which is bit less powerful processer than 'Sonoma' S4xp and above uses 'Sonoma' technonolgy by Intel. Sonoma consumes more power than 'dothan' which explans why older sony model has longer battery life. Personally I like the stick out battery :) The T-series have same 'stick out battery' concept design which I like :)

I woudn't mind the battery if it stuck out the whole length of the back.

So what you're saying is that although the new Ss have lower battery life they are alot more powerful.

i think the tests resulted in a 5-10% increase in performance with the Sonoma chipset.

    undervolting should increase battery life

Undervolting really does the trick. Standard battery life was around 3:00 for me on medium brightness. With undervolting ([email protected]) I recently checked my battery status while browsing a PDF and it said 3:41, thats a 23% increase in battery time!

You know I'm still in the big dilemma of what to buy, I mean IS the Sony S really worth paying that extra money for? or is it better to buy the Asus W3V and get another laptop later next year when dual core comes out?

u have to ask urself if it's really worth
somethings that sony will make it worth to help u make up ur mind:
-sleeker look(if u care alot abt aesthetics)
    -better screen

I guess hardware nowadays most of the stuff inside are the same.. so these r the little things which u may/may not appreciate.. for me I value the screen alot coz I do photo editing. I can't put up with substandard and some of the screen r too reflective. Looks is secondary but well if u bring around work or campus and people wow at it u will fell good won't u ..
    hehhe :p

You got it all wrong here. ;)

Dothan is part of Sonoma platform, like Bainas was part of Centrino platform.

There isn't any Sonoma processor. Sonoma is code name for Dothan processor accompanied with updated WLan chipset, codenamed Calexico 2 and updated chipset codenamed Alviso (which offers Intel's High Definition Audio technology).

All new laptops (T, TX, S and all other series included) use Sonoma platform.
The differences are processor speed and voltage range (standard, Low Voltage and Ultra Low Voltage).

Is it clearer now ? ;)
