Yes, my SZ650N/C Fan noise is extremely severe. I decided to "Never" "Never" buy Sony laptop.
My wife said always "Please turn off the sony latop. Generating extremely loud noise and Causing headache."
When I change OS from Vista to (downsizing to XP OS) still noisy.
Even I successfully from Vista to Windows 7 OS, initially 30min is ok. But
easily overheated and huge noise came out...
I believe, ventilating structure is big problem in Sony Laptop.
"Bye Bye Sony. Sucks!!!" -
Did you install all the proper hardware drivers?

Mine (SZ750 and almost identical) is so quiet even with my ear to it I can barely hear it. Something is wrong if this is what you are experiencing and is rather common to all laptops not just Sony. However Sony makes it easy to deal with.
Is there heat coming out to match the noise, or is it just noise. The heat coming out of mine is hot when my fans go nuts. The rest of the time you would be hard pressed to hear them.
First make sure that as mentioned, you have up to date drivers. This includes bios. Some drivers make things run hot, some make fans run fast.
Check your fan settings in power management. I run mine on adaptive at all times. This allows them to run quiet when there is low heat and high when there is high heat. Setting a static number is in my opinion bad unless it is on performance. Too low with lots of heat can burn up your laptop. If they run fast but no heat, you may have them set to max speed regardless of heat load.
On the other hand...
If the air is mildly warm with high speed fans, then your heat sinks may not be working properly. This can be from one of two reasons. The first is blocked air channels. Pull the covers off the bottom (THANK YOU SONY!) and make sure the heatsinks are clean. You can even pull the assembly out rather easily. I recommend this and replace the thermal (heat sink) compound with new stuff. This helps a lot as it can get old and crusty.
If this doesn't help then you have to a bit deeper. I did this and made my system even better than it was. Mine is silent 99% of the time now.
You will need to disassemble the system enough to remove ALL of the heatsinks and replace the heat sink compound. This takes some effort, but makes the video cards run cooler.
This made the heat out the back greater. This is an illusion. Yes, the laptop seems to produce more heat, however, instead of being inside baking, it is now being pumped outside which is what you want. Cool air vents mean you are not getting the heat out. You want heat coming out. Bad compound makes the heat just sit and overheat your video card and processor, many of which have a system to slow them down so they do not overheat. This means your system can gain speed by simply making it cooler.
