Hey Guys,
My cousin has a VGN-SZ660N that he's loved for years but just a week ago it seems the nvidia card crapped out. When I switch it to stamina it can still boot up fine and generally work but when you book it in speed mode there are lines everywhere and basically unusable...
Has anyone else had this problem? Is there anyway to get around this? He loves his SZ and can't really afford a new one so is there anyway to fix this?
Thanks

i believe the SZ series used the faulty 8400M GS series GPU.
If that is the case, the nVidia card will no longer work anymore. Basically, the solder joints on the GPU has failed, and nothing can repair the GPU.
You're going to be stuck in stamina mode for the life of the laptop now. -
There is a guy who repairs old Dell XPS models that had the 8400GS and 8600M GT GPUs that were such a problem. He charges a little over $100 for the service. I have no idea if he handles Sonys. I think a lot of repair places will not.

It might be worth an email.

a possible solution is to get your 8400 gs chip replaced with another one....this method worked for me.my 8400 gt in vgn ar 630e died 6 months back

you cant replace the GPU since its soldered to the motherboard without replacing the whole motherboard itself.
