Hello everyone, I am new to this board. I read many high quality posts about Windows 7 and VAIO Laptops so I wanted to share my experiences with Windows 7 x64 (64 bit) on a VGN-SZ71 WN/C.

The result is the device center you see here (German Version):

Everything is working, except these Points:
    a) Brightniss and Monitor Switch FN Keys are not working.
    b) S1 and S2 are not working. Stamina / Speed switch works, but there will be no popup that you need to reboot. So you have to remember this yourself ;-)
    c) Camera is not working. VGN-SZ (and TZ) have VGP-VCC7 camera models. I used Ricoh_6.210C Driver & VAIO Camera Capture Utility 2.7.
    d) VAIO Smart Network not working. I used VAIO_Smart_Network_2.3. The GUI is not working correctly.
    See Screenshot:

The procedure, drivers and tools I used:
Install everything in the correct order! Do reboot if you are asked to do so! Run all setups in Vista Service Pack 1 Mode and with administrator rights.

    Downloaded from: ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com/pub/Vaio/Original/
    1. Sony Shared Library 5.3
    2. Setting Utility Series 4.3
    3. VAIO Control Center 3.3
    4. Intel Chipset Driver (infinst_autol.exe)
    5. NVIDIA Driver from laptopvideo2go.com/ (and modded INF)
    6. Memory Card/Reader Writer. [Downloaded from http://vcl.vaio.sony.co.jp]
    7. VAIO Event Service 4.3
    8. VAIO Power Management 3.3
    9. VAIO Smart Network 2.3
    10. Fingerprint Driver [Downloaded from http://vcl.vaio.sony.co.jp]

I did not update any of the Windows 7 drivers for the following device because they work fine without any special drivers:
Sound, Ethernet, Intel WLAN, Modem, Bluetooth, Touchpad

I hope I could help some of you SZ owners. I would like to get some suggestions for the problems mentioned above. I will update new problems and the solutions for all problems.

PS: Drivers & Tools I did not need but I read that others did install them:
    - EP0000140022 SPIC
    - EP0000140021_SFEP.zip
    - Sony Firmware Extension Parser 8.0

a b and d are working on my SZ71WN/C and so is my webcam but with different drivers. However, the green light does not come on and you cannot use the Vaio capture software. I own a TT and this came with Vista 64bit and Sony bundled Arscoft Companion 2 which i found a little odd. I do recieve notification also when i switch my graphics card to a different mode.

Anyway, my laptop is working quite perfectly bar the webcam. You never mentioned your wwan also and mine is working. You might want to check leslieann's post for some of mine and James007bond's posts as to what we did as we also have the same laptop as you.

You pretty much need to read it to the end because of a lot of this was a work in progress.

    Edited to add:
In view of JTravers post you may solve most of your issues.

This issues with the smart network though and possibly your wwan these posts may help you. I also posted what drivers i am using in one of the below posts.

Part of your troubles with a & b are because you didn't install SPIC and SFEP. Follow the link Rachel posted. It gives the proper order of installation.

I read the whole thread and I think you got everything (bar the webcam) completely working.
I got a SZ71 as well (German version) with 8GB RAM and I am struggeling to install Win7 Ultimate 64 bit. it is working, but none of the Function keys, nor the WWAN ;(
Would you be so kind to let me know which drivers and versions you were working with to get to that point? I realize you switched back to 32 bit because of the noisy fan, but that is not troubling me at all.
Your help would be very appreciated. Maybe you can send me all the drivers packed up per PM?

    Thanks a lot!

That's what I installed in My SZ61WN with Win7 x64. All work, even the WWAN.
I don't need to install Sony Utilities dll, but I installed Video Shared Library. I don't install Battery Care function as well, I just replace the exe file in Sony Setting utility.

I installed Vaio Smart Network 2.1 (the 2.2 and 2.3 won't work) so that I can active the WWAN module. After that, I install GlobeTrotter Connect modded (by me) with the right driver.

    Hello everybody

I have so much problems with my SZ71WNC after I've installed WIN7 64bits.
    1) WWAN is not working
    2) scroll on thouchpad is not working
    3) cam is not working
    4) some funciton keys are not working
    5) even the DVD-RAM is not working when burning DVDs !!!

How could it be that Sony does not support a premium notebook like this one after only 18 months from purchase?

Will be anyone so kind to provide here a summary of the working drivers, where to find them, and the procedure to follow?

    Many thanks in advance

I outlined clearly in the second post what i did to get my wwan working for this model. I cannot add anything extra to those posts. The wwan will not function correctly if you don't have all the essential drivers installed.

The touchpad you need to download the SZ71WN/C touchpad drivers from the Sony website and then manually update the PS2 driver in the device manager.

The webcam is a known issue. The green light will not come on but there are a couple of workarounds.
You can use some of the drivers that have been linked in leslieann's thread.
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=428140
You can also try the driver that is linked in this post
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=430604

Basically you should be able to get everything working. You will need to download the SZ7 vista drivers and really they should suffice.
The essential drivers other than the smart network is the sony shared library, event service, SFEP Driver, Setting Utility Series, VAIO Power Management, SPIC Driver - 8.0 and the VAIO Control Center.

Sony tend to list the drivers in order here so you might want to follow this install order.

    http://www.sony.com.sg/support/download/241952/product/vgn-sz583n/sectionfirst?subpage=detail

A lot of the drivers state they are 32bit but they will work. The only thing that will not work properly is the battery care function. You can download that from the driver pack contained in this thread.
