    Hello,

even though I'm still traveling a lot, I decided that the 13" screen at home is just not enough, when I'm spending hours editing my pictures.

Dell U2311H caught my eye as it's "good enough" for hobby photography and it'll not break my budget.

The point is, is my notebook strong enough for this monitor? I'm planning to connect it through DVI on the docking station.

Is it possible to use external monitor through DVI in Stamina mode, or just Speed mode? Ironically it seems that Lightroom and Nic's plugins are running much smoother in Stamina mode, so I would prefer to continue using it.

Here are specs of the monitor. Specifications of my VGN-Z are in my signature.

Thank you very much for your input,
    eM :D

If it works like the Z1 then you will have to dock with speed mode to get it to work.

You could find out right now pretty easily, just plug a monitor in to the dock... try it out.

    Yep. That's correct.

Definitely SPEED mode only. STAMINA mode will not work using the DVI output of the docking station.

    Good luck. :)

Yes, I'm 100% sure. I own a VAIO VGN-Z690 notebook. About to put that notebook up in the MarketPlace for sale. :)

I believe on ALL of Sony's docks, DVI only works on the discrete graphics card.

I have a dock for my VGN-C and in the instruction manual for the dock, it said DVI is only compatible with computers with an external graphics card. I found this funny because to the best of my knowledge, this computer was never available with external graphics. (Maybe just in the Japan market? Or maybe they cheaped out on the docks and used the same boards between different computers.)

Thank you all :) I felt like it should work, but I also did remember there were some limitation, so I wanted to be sure. Unfortunately return policy is not that good in my country as it is in the US.

I would surely try it, if I would have any monitor at home. But right now I can connect just a TV and that's through HDMi...

And PS, you got new picture ComputerCowboy!! Oh well, I guess I'm not here as often as I used to be...

It is actually a really old picture, I think that was taken in '06 my other picture was from last year. Not like it matters much, I look the same. FWIW I still have that black hat, not sure where those mirrored aviators got to though.
