Can someone point me to a thread that will help me get drivers fro a Windows 7 install on a Z591U. Sony only has a Blu-Ray driver update on their official site. I would like to install 32 bit but possibly 64 bit on another laptop of the same model.
Thanks.

There are many threads for this. Most relate to 64-bit install since the drivers have not been directly updated on the sony site for the previous models. For the 32-bit install, the vista drivers work for the most part.
Here are a couple of the threads that I used for my Z590UAB:

I'm in the same place as you with the same model. I bought it ten months ago. Initially, it looked as if Sony were going to be providing Windows 7 drivers for this model. Now the site says it will not be supported. This coupled with locking out virtualization has placed me firmly in the anti-Vaio camp despite having owned three. Enough is enough. /rant
Here's what I'm going to do. I've purchased a 500GB drive for a clean Windows 7 install. It seems the "manual" thread showing how to get into the Z series is no longer available, so I'm looking elsewhere. In the worst case, I can fall back to the original hard drive with Vista Ultimate installed.
Have you had success with your install? Did you decide on 32-bit or 64-bit? -
I got a same laptop.Any body here install sucessful windows 7 on VGN-z591U
Thanks
Please post your steps.to make it working. -
Pretty unhappy that Sony has changed this model to not being supported when it showed it would be.
I have not done the upgrade yet but still plan to try using the links above. We'll see what happens I guess. -
Good luck with your upgrade.I waiting for your result. -
Hi guys! I have made the clean install of 7 onto my z590 and z591 with no problems. I got all the drivers from one of the links, provided by CALBenzo here. Everything works like a charm, includng my WWAN and Stamina-Speed switch. The only thing you really should pay attention to, is the order of installing the drivers. Good luck!

I've taken a look at many of the other threads on the forum, but they largely involve the 64-bit clean install as you said...and again I'm not willing to mess around with the BIOS, etc.
Is there any sort of campaign or movement to have Sony support Z owners who want to upgrade to Windows 7 (I would be willing to wait for that), or is it a lost cause? Has anyone found any sort of Sony or Microsoft support line that is all helpful for this issue?
BTW, can anyone comment on the extent of the performance gains or other benefits of going to Windows 7 32-bit from Vista 32-bit? I'd like to be able to conceptualize and quantify in terms of start up/shut down times, program start up and speed, etc. -- is there any head-to-head data for the Z?
Is the performance difference between 64-bit and 32-bit Windows 7 worth the effort, provided I'm only running 3 GB RAM and do not plan to upgrade? -
I'm gong to start the process on Wednesday. Can someone point me to a thread that describes opening the Z series to replace the hard drive? I want to install the 500GB for the clean install.
Thanks! I will post the details of my upgrade, including the steps taken and the results. -

Anyone have an idea where to find instructions on replacing the hard drive in a Z series?

Well I am up and running. One problem I just had was the mouse pad stopped working on resume from sleep mode. It was locked up. Maybe I should try the newer version with the cursor problem and change the registry.

Late coming back to the party, but I'm up and running as well. The only thing I did differently from some others was use the Vista SmartWi utility to load the driver for the Sprint WWAN card rather than continuing to use the Smart Network. I tried the Smart Network first, but the wireless devices exhibited the challenge of always turning "on" after boot and showing as unidentified in Device Manager when powered off. Loading the SmartWi utility fixed this.
So, here are the steps I took using the drivers in this thread except where otherwise noted:
1. Updated the BIOS found on the Sony Support site under Win7 (as of this writing there are only two files--BIOS and WinDVD), then swapped the 320GB drive for a 500GB and installed a clean copy of Win7 Ultimate 64-bit.
2. Loaded the video driver
3. Sony Shared Library
4. VAIO Event Service
5. VAIO Smart Network (Later replaced with Vista SmartWi for my model)
6. VAIO Control Center
7. Setting Utility Series
8. Protector Suite
9. ALPS pointer driver
10. VAIO Power Management
11. Ricoh Memory Card (Vista driver worked fine)
12. Ricoh Memory Stick (again, the Vista driver)
13. Installed SmartWi utility because I was getting the four items not identified in Device Manager when the WWAN was powered off. This fixed, so I uninstalled the Smart Network for Euro equivalent.
14. Installed the full WinDVD available as a Win7 64-bit download for my model on the Sony support site.
I've been running for four days now. Everything works including Stamina/Speed, Volume, Brigtness, Eject, and the two programmable buttons. So far, so good. No challenges that I've seen. No incompatibilities. No lockups, stuttering, or other odd behavior. I've tested HDMI connection, and played a Blu-Ray DVD as well without a problem. I've also reinstalled MS Office 7 and Norton Antivirus without incident.
Thanks for the input, everyone. I used the pictures in the previously-mentioned posts as a guide to replace the drive. In a worst-case scenario, I can always revert to the 320GB drive, but I like the space of the 500 and the speed of Win7 Ultimate 64-bit.
