I am trying to decide between a Macbook pro 13" or a Sony VGN-Z610Y/B. What bothers me is I am having a horrible time finding reviews on the VGN-Z610Y/B. What's up with that?

Just read one of the Vaio Z reviews, they're all essentially the same.

I think the Z610Y/B was originally a Best Buy 'exclusive', at least for some time, and then other retailers got it - like Amazon and the sellers on eBay.

I bought one because it was the only Z6xx model that had the lower res 1366-wide resolution instead of the 1600x900. You'll hear a lot of talk on here about either screen, but for me, even with the font size increased on the higher-res one, it was too small to read comfortably.

For many on here, there are issues with the Z screen, and I experienced all of them on the Z610Y/B. From "splotchy areas" (basically, non-uniform patches of cloudiness or non-whiteness on an all white background) to uneven backlighting, to this weird diagonal line "wave" effect (basically when you stare at the screen there are diagonal lines visible, almost like looking at a CRT with the refresh rate set too high or low), they all added up to an unsatisfactory user experience for me, so I returned it and bought an SR from Sony Style, which has a perfectly even backlight, color uniformity and no visible diagonal lines. I gave up some of the looks/design/quality from the Z, but the latter was somewhat ironic since I had been through 3 Zs and they all had problems with the display or LED backlight inverter.

The computer was fast but not as fast as what it replaced, the SZ791N/X. However the video performance in Windows 7 was much better than the SZ and although I didn't use it for gaming, I could render photoshop files while watching movies with little problem.

If you're looking at buying one from eBay, be careful if your eyes are sensitive to LCD screen variances. To the best of my knowledge they're discontinued this model at Best Buy, but there may still be display units for you to check out. I didn't see any of the low-res screens at the Sony Style store here in LA, but I did notice the diagonal line effect on them as well. I'm not sure what it is, and why I see it, and why it's not present on the SR, but it could have something to do with how thin the Z screen (tho the SR screen is pretty thin too.) Bottom line - check one out in person before you buy online.

yea the z series actually looks pretty decent yet nobody is reviewing it at all. yes the old models are essentially the same but it has improvements that people may be intetersted in. with say apple, once a new product is released, you will get a new review. even if its merely a refresher to the fans

Are you kidding? I'm seeing more than a dozen when typing 'Sony Vaio Z' review in google.
