Hello,
I'm sure this has been answered somewhere but I can't find it. For $50 more you can get the premium carbon fiber color. Is this just a different paint job or a different case?
-
paint job/ finish, just gives it a nicer look
-
To be totally blunt, the premium carbon fiber lid does nothing for you.
On a serious note, just like htn1042 had said, it is just design/finish. That's all.
-
Thank you both, good to know!
-
Wait, a premium carbon fibre color? As in the case isn't made of carbon fibre, it's just painted like it would be?
-
No, it's not painted. It's plastic with milled (finely chopped up) recycled carbon fibre embedded for the visual effect.
A real carbon fibre lid would have a woven carbon fibre cloth embedded, but serve no useful purpose on a laptop. -
A real carbon fibre chassis (or even just a lid) would be sturdy and light so it would be nice but a carbon fibre effect just seems silly.
-
Well, the Z is made with carbon fiber reinforced in plastic so the traditional carbon fiber look isn't there.
I guess Sony actually did go with function OVER form for once
-
All Sony Z lids are made of carbon fibre and plastic. I don't think it is just a visual thing. It should also give the lid some greater degree of strength.
The carbon fibre and premium carbon fibre models differ in pattern design and that is all.
-
No, it isn't.
It contains recycled ground-up carbon fibers, which makes it light and stiff, but not stronger. The strength of carbon fiber comes from the length of the fibers. When you chop it up, you keep the light weight, but lose the strength. -
There is lots of difference, easiest comparison - SZ series where cheaper models are made of regular plastic. Wikipedia link, what is the connection to Vaio other the trolling, writing about stuff you have no sh of idea.?
I know how carbon feels, works, over a decade using custom instrument made for me by Kaman / Ovation, pioneers in using composite materials, not just for musical instruments but also for aviation. Since I did participated in the development know a bit about this material.
It was and is brilliant idea to use it for notebooks, but it was and is expensive technology, I wish they have also carbon FW.
Spreading nonsense and trolling was and is always lousy idea. -
Pissy attitude - always a good counter-argument.
-
What are the sources you are getting your information from? The information that deals with what the Vaio Z is using and the properties of strength it has?
I'm not sure what your link to Wikipedia is for, but Wikipedia is only good for its sources as far as I'm concerned. The page has relatively no sources though, so I can delete information on the page right now by claiming the information on the page is unsourced and false per WP policies. I'm sure we've all heard about the fabricated information on Wikipedia where many major newspapers cited Wikipedia when the information turned out to be false. -
I have had regular black, premium carbon fiber and now the bordeaux red, all Z?90's and the difference really seems aesthetic.
I woudl suggest the bordeaux red anyway, since it looks amazing. It is extremely refined and stately, see below.
More picture to come soon, in the official owners' thread.Attached Files:

I'm looking forward to more pictures of the Bordeaux Red lid. By the way, I'll also like to suggest maybe you can kindly take the photos in a different environment (without that lighting) because I cannot quite "see" the beauty of that lid. Thanks in advance.
-
If you plan on putting wheels on it and making it double as a race car, THEN id go for the carbon fiber lid.
-
Agreed. Looks like the camera is contributing to that color; quite a difference from the online / manufacturer pics. Looks good regardless though.
As regards the "premium" lid, it's really subtle. Used to have a Z with that; snazzy, and I'd pay for it again, but it's hardly a big deal.
VGN-Z790 - what does the premium carbon fiber do for me?
