Has anyone used the docking station for the Sony S series laptops (VGP-PRS30 or one of the other variants).

I understand it has a built in HDD and I just wondered how this works in terms of using it for back up purposes, e.g. is the process authomated in some way or does it just appear as a drive and you have to run backup software as you would with any other external drive? Also does it spin all the time when the docking station is in use or can you switch it off independently of the docking station?

Thanks in advance if anyone can describe their experience.

    I am using it.
Once you dock, system (VAIO Control Center) will pop up to ask you whether or not you want to back up.
    I don't answer "Yes", so I don't know what's next.

It's hard to say if it spins whole time or not, but it is USB.

    Thanks for the reply.
Just wondering does it have an option to switch off the drive (either by a physical switch or via software) of is it just 'on' all the time when connected up - as it would seem to be rather energy inefficient if you need to have a HDD spinning all the time just for the rare occasions when you decide to do a backup. Sony don't provide any detailed technical info on power consumption etc. Would make sense if it 'went to sleep' after a period of inactivity in the same way you can make the laptop's HDD do so.

    Cheers
