I installed VISTA RTM on VAIO S580P (WEI 2.3)

    SPECS: PM740 1.73GHz, 2GB RAM, 7200RPM Hitachi 100GB HDD
    GeForce Go 6400 256MB (32MB + 224MBTurboCache)

    Windows Experience Index is 2.3
VISTA's explorer is way way faster than XP's (true)
Hitman Blood Money looks better & runs faster (maybe I'm paranoid)
Tomb Raider Legend @ 1280x800/NextGenOn runs way faster compared to XP @ same settings (true)
Aero works perfectly well. Download HDAudio Driver here http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads...=24&level=4&conn=3&downtypeid=3&getdown=false
    Bluetooth works perfectly well (http://aps.toshiba-tro.de/bluetooth/pages/download.php)
I kinda prefer vista basic to aero theme. Weird, I know (Edit: I kinda was outa ma mind. GLASS rocks)
VISTA installed in 20min probably due to 7200RPM HDD spin
    Dont bother VaioEventService/SonyUtilities/Hotkeys DONT WORK!!!

Games run better on Vista? Wow that's impressive. Time to get a Vista notebook. Something like Core 2 Duo and X1900 ;)

well, at last! something to look forward to.

one (of many) possible explanation for this is that windows has clean up its kernel and possibly the deep intergration of DirectX has something to do with this.

i wonder if your notebook run cooler or hotter running vista. does it uses the GPU too much, that it creates a lot of heats?

And you have a Go 6400! Which is a bit dated, imagine the X1000 series or 7xxx series!

    Hello,

Is Windows Vista faster than XP? (boot times, general applications etc.) and does Vista continually access the HDD for indexing and other file system purposes?

My concern being that, is Vista a memory hog?

    TIA

Surefire, did you experience any problems when istalling Vista on your S580? Do the FN Keys for brightness and volume work? Is there bluetooth funciotnality? What about the battery life, have you noticed a significant decrease? Does Aero work on your system?

I'm also planning that in the new year, but I want an AMD dual core chip like a 65nm Turion 64x2. Cheaper and better than Intel, and 64-bit ready too. :)

Oh, and I'll never buy another Sony either. Next time it's probably going to be an HP.

With RC1 RC2 and the RTM versions, it made a file called Windows Old.
Just kept the old windows XP fsystem files. No other files. But these in a sense were not "upgrades" but a reinstall of a new OS.

I installed Vista on my S460, my fn key doesnt work and I think the sleep mode is really draining my battery life, so i decide to bring the hibernate option out to save more power. Sleep is only ok if you are on AC power, the speed is amazing, brings out your desktop back in less than 5 secs.

Anybody experienced problems with fn keys? Please be kind sharing the solution.

Thats the reason i uninstalled Vista from my s260 because i couldnt get the FN keys to work! And that sucked for power saving feature...couldnt dim it or nothing...I am back to win xp..and i think after using the vista for a bit,,i am not too impressed. The only thing i am impressed with Vista is the Readyboost feature and the Aero interface...noting else..
But readyboost is one of the best features.

Are there any applications for XP that emulate readyboost?

I am also enjoying my version of Vista business N (vgn-s460). the only issues I have had is I cant get the S Buttons to work or the Funtion keys for brightness and volume. I also had an issue with the Nvidia drivers that sony offers, it shuts off aero and the one that microsoft downloads crashes my desktop (but aero works). I think this version of windows makes my laptop come alive. I was wondering what drivers did you install and get to work with your installation? I cant get the sony power management to work but with out the function keys what is the point. oh the only thing I found that sucks so far with my version of vista is that it doesnt come with a copy of media player. I tried to install it from microsoft.com but it says there is not a version of media player 11 for vista yet.

Oh to answer the question about temp, I think it does create a little more heat then before.

I ran vista RTM on my sz330 for awhile. The performance boost was nice, but not without cost.....I lost about 30 minutes of run time while on battery. I went back to XP for that reason alone.

I got my hands on a copy of Vista business, restored my copy of XP home then installed vista business over top with all the updates installed. it runs nice after I grabed the new Nvidia driver from microsoft. I also enabled ready boost it is working great the new driver should save me some juice on my battery since the laptop is running so much cooler now. also raised my windows experiance too.

I used Partition Magic to make 3 partitions (XP, Vista, and Data) on my SZ110. I can dual boot and access all my files from either OS. It's a nice way to transition to Vista slowly while I wait for all the drivers I need to become available.

Vista is nowhere a breakthrough at all here - in fact it's MUCH slower and unresponsive (Aero and all the visual crap is off) on my dual-core workstation here, at work.
I hate this PoS, to tell you the truth - my machine went from a snappy, very responsive XP to a totally ****ty, slow, unresponsive crap.
The driver MS supplied in Vista for my onboard Broadcom Gb is a TOTAL PIECE OF CRAP, I am having really long latencies, sometimes even timeouts, laughable speed to my local servers (yes, I've everything, I'm the chief tech person here ;)).

I'm guissing the reason Vista is so ****ty is that I have upgraded from XP Pro - which was a deliberate decision as I'm testing it for the company.

YMMV but so far after 2-3 months of testing - we're in the volume licensing program - I say no Vista for us for at least 6 months, rather a year.

It's an utterly unfinished, unpolished yet ridiculously priced PoS, MS have to put another year of hard work into it if they want to get me and these few hundred machines under my command.

Mossberg is a well-known (paid) Apple shill, I would be surprised anybody would give a flying **** about his opinion on anything.

OTOH he, as usually, totally misses the point and tries to be politically correct and writes some toned-down BS instead of actually writing down balck and white that the UI is actually worse in many ways: most of the things I could reach with 1-2 clicks in XP now are all at least 6-8 clicks away, buried under submenus and subpages.

Plain stupid and annoying, that's what Vista is for me.

I'd love to see evidence of this. Seriously. Sure, he's well-known. Yes, he's paid by the Wall Street Journal. Apple shill, though? Not so sure about that (barring his misplaced love for the iPhone anyway). Does he have a bias? Possibly. I'm biased for Windows. But that's because it's what I'm used to and and what I need for my job.

I think he usually does a good job and is fair in his opinions whether Apple or Windows. - which are geared more for your day-to-day end user. He doesn't write for the bleeding edge.

Sure, he didn't give Vista a great review (and rightly so), but he loved office 2007.

You gotta be joking - he's the posterboy of the sold-out "journalism". WHen somebody hails every product of a company, over a decade then it's kinda hilarious to ask why he's a shill, don't you think?

He's either 1. totally clueless hence his narrow view or 2. being paid or some other way interested - my personal opinion -in pumping up Apple's shares.

His reviews are pathetic - he's the classic worthless "analysts" like most of his kind in the media. I worked in the media - in EU, though -, I know how it works, the contra-selective environment, solely moved by influence and connections.

Vista is only a sequel to an already familiar story. It brings no essential novelty or if it does they aren’t visible enough to make you at least say, “Yes, it’s worth it. I’ll install it now!”

I was just wondering how people got the memory stick to work if the mass storage controller is coming up as an unknown device. I did a fresh install of Vista, and all but the touchpad, storage controller, and the HD Audio drivers were configured.

I still use the Alps touchpad software even though it says it's not compatible (it works great). I upgraded the HD Audio from Realtek, but I can't seem to find the mass storage controller driver. Any suggestions?

Also, anyone have problems with the computer going to sleep? It logs off and looks like it's about to go to sleep, but nothing happens. I don't have any power managment tools installed from sony (since this wasn't an upgrade) and I was just wondering if anyone else doing a fresh install had this problem.

Vista is otherwise running very smoothly, and actually faster than my XP installation. Because this was a fresh install, it could be that it's not as bogged down with a year's worth of "dirtying" the XP installation. One way or another, I'm really happy with the software, and would be extatic if I had my power management features back.

So it looks like the ALPS touchpad utility was updated, and so was the memory-stick driver.

My only concern now is the fact that the notebook does not go to sleep. It can hibernate without a problem, but it just doesn't put itself in a sleep state. Anybody have a clue as to why? It actually went to sleep one time, and it was total BLISS, but can't reproduce it. Any help is appreciated.
